BYD Shares Rebound Ahead of October 29 Results as Analysts Diverge
Published on 10/23/2026 at 20:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deBYD shares climbed 4.1% in Hong Kong today, catching a broad recovery across auto and battery stocks after the market-wide pullback in the previous session. The advance came alongside a positive earnings estimate from Citi, though the move cannot be pinned to any single trigger — the sector-wide rebound and the analyst view both played a part.
Citi's Profit Estimate Puts October 29 in Focus
According to media reports, Citi expects BYD to post a net profit of 12.95 billion yuan for the third quarter, a figure that excludes foreign-exchange effects and the earnings contribution from BYD Electronic. The forecast shifts attention to the quarterly results scheduled for October 29.
That distinction matters for investors. The estimate does not necessarily describe the full reported group profit, so comparing it with the upcoming figures will depend on which contributions and effects each set of numbers includes. It is also a projection, not a result already on the books.
The results release is therefore the next concrete test of the bullish case. Today's price reaction signals a friendlier reception for the expectations, but the gain alone says nothing about whether BYD will meet them.
CLSA Trims Its Target
CLSA provided a counterweight, cutting its price target on BYD to HK$104 from HK$120. According to media reports, no change to the investment rating was mentioned.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
The two analyst signals operate on different levels: Citi offers a specific profit estimate, while CLSA is pulling back its target price. That does not add up to a uniformly optimistic analyst stance — nor would it be fair to read the target cut as a downgrade.
Seagull Refresh and Great Han Round Out the Picture
In the background, BYD has launched the second generation of its Seagull in China with five trim variants. The update includes a five-seat interior and the second-generation Blade Battery with fast-charging technology across three of the variants. Prices range from RMB 65,900 to RMB 99,900, pairing the model change with a spread of price points within the line.
Fast charging is the central technical feature of the launch. On its own, though, a market debut is no proof of extra sales or higher profits — investors should weigh product progress and earnings development separately.
The lineup also includes the Great Han, an electric flagship sedan unveiled in China. Media reports cite a range of more than 1,000 kilometers, along with fast-charging capability. The two models strike different notes: the Seagull emphasizes entry pricing and the new charging tech, while the Great Han tops the range as a flagship. Neither offers a concrete read on earnings yet.
Goldman Keeps Buy Rating but Cuts Estimates
Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its buy recommendation on BYD on October 15 and left its price target at HK$134 — neither a fresh upgrade nor a raised target. The positive rating came with more cautious assumptions on profitability, a distinction that matters when sizing up the new models: a buy call does not mean near-term business expectations are improving.
For 2026–2030, Goldman cut its profit estimates by 2%–6%, pairing an unchanged recommendation with lower forecasts.
Malaysia Assembly Letter of Intent
Media reports also indicate BYD signed a letter of intent with Malaysian automaker Inokom covering local contract assembly. Such an agreement is not yet a final manufacturing contract.
Taken together, the picture is mixed: BYD is widening its vehicle range and pursuing additional production options, while the lowered profit estimates are a reminder not to equate technical innovation with rising profitability. How the announced results stack up against expectations will decide the next move in the valuation — until then, the rebound is a positive market signal, not confirmation of an earnings trend.
