CATL Extends Battery Lead to 39.1% as Dongfeng Deal Widens Charging and Swap Reach
Published on 11/02/2026 at 16:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL shares climbed 3.1% on Monday, riding a broader rally in Hong Kong-listed lithium battery names after SNE Research published fresh installation data. A separate report put the gain at 3.4%. Either way, the advance came with a sector-wide tailwind — but the company also carried an argument of its own.
Global installations of electric-vehicle batteries reached 994.5 GWh between January and September 2026, up 19.7% year on year, according to SNE Research. September alone accounted for 145.1 GWh, a worldwide record for a single month.
CATL's slice of that market keeps widening. The company installed 389.2 GWh over the nine-month stretch, a 24.9% increase that outpaced the overall market and lifted its share to 39.1%. That compares with 38.3% for January through August, leaving CATL with the industry's largest market share. The distinction matters: a growing market is a sector story, while above-market growth is a company-specific one.
Volume Strength, Earnings Drag
The top line tells a different story than the bottom line. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 came in at RMB 165.22 billion, up 58.6% from a year earlier. Net profit attributable to shareholders reached RMB 21.25 billion — a gain of just 14.5%.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
That gap between revenue and profit growth is the number to watch. Reuters reported on October 21 that earnings momentum had slowed amid tougher competition in batteries and cooling growth in Chinese car sales. Market leadership is intact; the question is how efficiently CATL converts volume into profit.
Dongfeng Deal Covers Charging, Swapping and Overseas Push
Dongfeng Motor said Friday it had signed an agreement to deepen cooperation with CATL. The pact spans ultra-fast charging, battery swapping, overseas markets and joint brand marketing — pairing technical collaboration with shared commercial promotion.
The tie-up builds on CATL's existing swapping infrastructure. On October 20 the company unveiled its Tianxing II battery platform for heavy trucks and said it would expand its Qiji swap network to 900 stations in China by the end of the year, with 2,000 targeted by 2027.
Project Pipeline Fills Out
Other developments rounded out the week. On Friday, CATL-affiliated Yichun Times New Energy Mining received environmental approval for the Zhenkouli–Jianxiawo lithium mining project — a permitting milestone rather than evidence of active extraction. A day earlier, CATL presented its TENER+ energy storage system, with nine megawatt-hours of capacity, at All-Energy Australia, and signed letters of intent with Hitachi Energy, EPEC Group and the University of New South Wales. Those agreements open the door to cooperation; they do not constitute binding sales orders.
CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
On the technology front, CATL said Tuesday that trial small-series production of sulfide solid-state batteries remains on schedule for 2027 — a future plan, not a completed manufacturing step.
The bull case rests on the installation figures: CATL is not merely keeping pace with a rising market, it is gaining ground on it. The project news adds color to that picture but does not substitute for proof on the earnings line. What remains to be demonstrated is how convincingly the company turns market strength into profit growth.
