Bank of America Securities trimmed its price target on CATL from 775 to 630 HKD, yet kept its "Buy" rating intact — a combination that captures the central tension in the battery maker's investment case. Robust demand is no longer the question. Converting that demand into dependable earnings and cash is.

The brokerage now models higher shipments of energy-storage batteries but lower average battery prices and thinner gross margins. More units, in other words, no longer translate automatically into proportionally more profit. Its revised forecasts cut adjusted net profit by 8.6% for 2026 and by 14.8% for 2027 — and the fact that the outer year takes the deeper hit undercuts any reading of this as a one-quarter blip.

A Quarter That Splits Growth From Profitability

Tuesday's results laid out the gap in hard numbers. Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 reached 165.221 billion RMB, up 58.58% year on year, according to media reports. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at 21.246 billion RMB, a gain of just 14.54%. The gross margin stood at 20.69%.

That divergence is the metric to watch in coming reports: does the spread between top-line and bottom-line growth narrow? Until it does, additional scale offers no sufficient proof of stronger earning power. A convergence of the two rates would signal that CATL is wringing more out of its expansion.

Cash generation sharpens the concern. Operating cash flow for the first nine months fell 23.60% year on year, while the third quarter alone saw a 93.59% plunge — the weakest reading since the second quarter of 2018, per media reports. CATL points to shorter payment terms with suppliers, higher advance payments and long-running overseas projects. Those are concrete explanations for the cash tie-up, but they do not alter the fact that the core business released far less money.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Earnings took separate hits. A higher share of lower-value-added products and changed tax conditions weighed on profit, the company said, with the consumption tax on lithium batteries and a reduced export tax rebate compounding a problem that extra volume alone cannot fix.

Heavy Trucks as the Demand Case

The bullish counterweight sits in commercial vehicles. At Tuesday's launch of its Tianxing-II battery solution, CATL reported signed initial orders for 13,000 heavy trucks — a firmer demand signal than a bare product announcement. Reuters also reported that the Qiji system can swap a truck battery in roughly five minutes, with the economic opportunity lying in pairing that technology with a growing swap network.

Rollout targets give the strategy a calendar. CATL aims for 900 heavy-truck swap stations in China by year-end and 2,000 by 2027, according to Reuters. Both are expansion goals, not installed totals. Station counts can make strategic progress visible; they do not by themselves settle the question of profitability.

Market Share Slips as Competition Bites

Against that stands a genuine risk. Reuters reported that intensifying battery competition and a cooling in Chinese car sales weighed on development — conditions under which a sharp revenue rise need not produce a matching profit increase. CATL's share of China's installed traction-battery market fell from 49.8% in January to 40.9% in September, Reuters said. The company can expand its business while ceding ground, and a sustained trend would further limit the economic benefit of extra sales.

Share buybacks continued yesterday, with the repurchased stock earmarked for cancellation, according to media reports. That matters for the capital structure but says nothing about future earnings quality.

What Would Change the Verdict

Wednesday's 7.8% share-price gain is a positive market signal, not a fundamental turning point. It overturns neither the lowered profit forecasts nor last quarter's weak cash generation.

The proof point is whether CATL can bring growth, profitability and operating cash flow back into alignment — and whether the truck orders and swap-station buildout turn into economically viable additional business. Demand, the company has already demonstrated. Turning it into retained financial firepower is the harder test.
