CATL's 7.8% Rebound Meets a Harder Question: Where Is the Profit?
Published on 10/25/2026 at 06:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL shares climbed 7.8% on Friday as Chinese battery, EV and technology names recovered broadly, with media reports pointing to renewed appetite for growth stocks following a sharp selloff. The move came without a fresh company-specific announcement, and it is best read as part of a wider market swing rather than a re-rating of the battery maker on its own merits.
That distinction matters, because the operating picture underneath the rally is more complicated than the price action suggests.
Buybacks and swap deals sit behind the bounce
Chinese sector coverage tied the recovery in battery stocks to several catalysts, among them CATL's own share repurchases and a string of battery-swapping partnerships. The company said it bought back 3,488,600 A-shares on Wednesday for roughly RMB 800 million, followed by a further 2,271,000 A-shares on Thursday for about RMB 499.9 million — purchases on two consecutive trading days.
On the partnership front, CATL and the Shaanxi Transportation Holding Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement on Wednesday covering the electrification of commercial vehicles, battery-swap stations for heavy trucks, energy storage and highway charging infrastructure. Media reports also said CATL, its Chocolate Swap unit and Huawei subsidiary Yinwang agreed on Monday to link their systems technically, connecting Huawei's intelligent-driving technology with CATL's swap ecosystem. The planned vehicle-to-station sequence is designed to complete a battery swap in 99 seconds.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
Reuters, meanwhile, reported CATL's plans to expand its heavy-truck swap network to 900 stations in China by the end of the year, rising to 2,000 by 2027. Those targets give the cooperation agreements a concrete build-out schedule.
The third-quarter numbers cut both ways
The figures CATL reported on Tuesday for the third quarter of 2026 frame the tension. Revenue reached RMB 165.221 billion, up 58.58% year on year. Net profit attributable to shareholders came in at RMB 21.246 billion — 14.54% higher than a year earlier, but 5.77% lower than in the previous quarter.
So the top line is expanding fast while the bottom line slipped sequentially. That gap is the crux for investors: the question is not whether CATL is growing, but whether profit can close the distance to revenue. Until that becomes clearer, the sales surge supports a constructive view without offering full reassurance.
The reported gross margin of 20.69% gives a concrete data point to watch. A single figure says nothing about direction on its own, but combined with the next set of earnings it should help separate growth from earnings quality.
JPMorgan steps back from its bullish call
JPMorgan downgraded CATL's H-shares from Overweight to Neutral on Monday, cutting its price target to HK$500 from HK$725. The broker cited a faster-than-expected deterioration in industry profitability.
That view goes to the heart of the investment case. If sector-wide earnings conditions keep worsening, even robust revenue growth may only partly support profit, and additional partnerships — strategically relevant as they are — would not be an immediate counterargument.
CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Even after the target cut, the house kept its high-conviction expectation of above-average performance. The combination is what counts: lower expectations do not rule out a positive longer-term view, but they do demand closer scrutiny of earnings.
What would confirm the recovery
The bullish case rests on high revenue growth continuing while profit stabilizes, which would let the sequential decline look like a temporary soft patch and give the rebound a fundamental footing rather than mere market tailwind. The bearish case is equally concrete: surging sales paired with inadequate profit would mean friendly sentiment is papering over a persistent problem, and the quarterly profit drop would read as a warning rather than an anomaly.
Further business figures and management commentary on profitability are the next real test, alongside tangible progress in integrating compatible BAIC models into CATL's Choco Swap network — a cooperation agreed on Thursday that both companies intend to serve one million vehicles. For now, neither the share-price jump nor a single analyst's target cut settles the argument. What matters is whether CATL can narrow the gap between dynamic revenue growth and weaker profit.
