CATL's Indonesia Plant Starts Output as Zeng Sets Sights on 1,000 GWh
Published on 11/05/2026 at 21:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL shares climbed 4.4% on Wednesday, riding a broader rally across Chinese clean-energy names. Reuters attributes the sector-wide advance to investors betting that a Democrat-controlled US Congress would lend stronger support to renewables — a shift in political expectations for the industry rather than any company-specific guidance.
The more concrete development sits in Southeast Asia. According to media reports, CATL's joint plant with Antam in Indonesia has already begun production ahead of its scheduled official opening. The project carries an investment volume of US$6 billion and an initial annual capacity of 6.9 GWh.
That milestone matters because it moves the venture beyond the announcement stage and into actual operation. It does not, however, establish how quickly the facility will reach full utilisation or what it will contribute to earnings. Industrial progress and commercial success are separate questions, and the distinction is a useful one when a stock is moving on sentiment.
Employee Scheme and a Delivery Target
On Tuesday, CATL allocated reserved shares under its second A-share employee stock ownership plan for 2026. The grant covers 376 employees drawn from middle management and core staff, comprising 298,159 shares at RMB 158.42 apiece. Shareholders had approved the plan, along with related administrative and authorisation proposals, on Monday. A motion to provide financial support to a controlled subsidiary also cleared the vote.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
On the operational side, CATL chief Robin Zeng said on Saturday that he expects deliveries to exceed 1,000 GWh in 2026, up from 661 GWh shipped in 2025.
Storage Deals Across Europe and Australia
CATL, Ampace and Octopus Energy signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to explore smart home storage solutions for Europe, with the UK, France and Spain as priority markets. Ampace is to develop and manufacture the cells, battery management systems and storage units.
A separate European storage initiative was agreed with INTILION on 27 October. That memorandum envisions the deployment of CATL energy storage systems totalling 3 GWh over five years, targeting Germany, Switzerland, Austria and other countries. The systems are intended for both large-scale applications and the commercial and industrial segment.
On 30 October, CATL also unveiled its TENER+ energy storage system worldwide and signed further letters of intent in Australia.
Third-Quarter Growth Sets the Bar
The case for watching execution rather than headlines rests on the figures CATL published on 21 October. Third-quarter 2026 revenue reached RMB 165.22 billion, a gain of 58.6% year on year.
CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Profit attributable to shareholders came in at RMB 21.25 billion, up 14.5% — a markedly slower pace than the top line. That does not diminish the expansion, but it argues against treating more business volume as automatically equivalent to stronger profitability. New capacity and fresh cooperation agreements gain lasting credibility only when earnings keep pace.
Each type of announcement carries a different evidential weight: a letter of intent documents willingness to cooperate, a product launch signals an offering, and the start of production represents genuine operational progress. None of them should be read uniformly as secured business success.
The Indonesian ramp-up gives CATL a firmer foothold than the political tailwind lifting the sector. For the story to hold over the longer run, the quality of earnings will need to keep step with the expansion.
