CATL's Profit Engine Sputters Just as Its Swap Network Takes Shape
Published on 10/26/2026 at 20:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL closed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shaanxi Transportation Holding Group on Wednesday, covering the electrification of commercial vehicles, battery-swap infrastructure for heavy trucks, and energy storage with related services. The timing is pointed: the world's largest battery maker is signing new deals at a brisk clip while its core earnings power is under its sharpest pressure in nearly two years.
Third-quarter figures released on October 20 landed well short of expectations. Revenue climbed 58.58% year on year to 165.22 billion yuan, yet net profit advanced just 14.54% to 21.25 billion yuan — far below the LSEG SmartEstimate consensus, which had pencilled in growth above 40%. Gross margin slid to 20.69%, down 5.1 percentage points from a year earlier and the weakest reading since the fourth quarter of 2022. Sequentially, net profit fell 5.77%.
The stock tells its own story. At 238.00 CNY, the shares sit just above their 52-week low of 216.51 CNY and a long way from the 52-week high of 468.75 CNY. Investors now face a straightforward question: is this a temporary dip, or the start of structurally lower profitability?
Tax Changes and Contract Mix Weigh on Margins
Pricing pressure is only part of the explanation. Since September 1, 2026, China has levied a 2% consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries, scheduled to double to 4% on September 1, 2027. Lower export tax rebates and the delivery of thinner-margin long-term contracts in the energy storage segment have added to the drag.
Whether management can offset this headwind through scale effects and technical differentiation will decide the story from here. Pull it off, and the business model stays intact. Fail, and the de-rating has further to run.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
Buybacks and a Widening Global Footprint
Supporting the bull case is an undisputed lead abroad. Between January and August 2026, CATL lifted its global share of battery installations to 39.4%, up from 37.7% a year earlier. Stationary energy storage already accounts for roughly a quarter of global revenue and is projected to reach about half of total sales by 2030.
The company is also pushing into new applications. It unveiled the Tianxing II battery line for commercial vehicles, which it says enables a pack swap in under five minutes. On October 19, CATL, Shidai Dianfu and Huawei-affiliated Yinwang signed an agreement reportedly linking Huawei's intelligent driving systems with CATL's swap ecosystem. A week earlier, CATL had presented the Tianxing II platform alongside an upgraded swapping solution.
Management is putting money behind the vision. The truck-swap network in China is targeted at 900 stations by the end of 2026, 2,000 by 2027, and 10,000 over the longer term, according to Reuters. On the storage side, CATL and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published the "Storage+" report on October 16, jointly promoting a global energy storage initiative.
Shareholder returns are part of the picture too. By the end of September, CATL had repurchased a cumulative 10,945,162 A-shares — 0.2482% of total A-share capital — for 3.303 billion RMB excluding fees, a figure booked in the quarterly report.
The Home Front Is Where the Ground Is Shifting
The bear case rests on structural share losses in China, the company's home market. Between January and September 2026, CATL's domestic share of traction batteries fell sharply from 49.8% to 40.9%. Rival BYD was the main beneficiary, expanding from 17.4% to 21.1% over the same period.
Compounding the problem, automakers are working to loosen their dependence on the market leader. Li Auto is pursuing a dual-sourcing strategy, investing in competitors such as Sunwoda and planning its own battery capacity for the second half of 2026. XPeng is pressing ahead with in-house battery production from 2026. If that diversification continues while the Chinese consumption tax rises to 4% in September 2027, CATL's shipment volumes and pricing power come under pressure from two directions at once.
What to Watch in the Coming Quarters
Defending the margin line in the core business is the decisive variable. So long as gross margin holds around the current 20% level and international leadership remains intact, the depressed share price leaves room for a fundamental bottoming-out. Should profitability slip below that range in coming reporting periods, the valuation discount to historical averages is likely to entrench.
The first concrete test comes at the end of 2026, when the 900-truck-station target in China falls due. How that build-out is executed will offer the first real read on whether CATL's new business lines beyond cell manufacturing can carry their weight.
