CATL has a demand story and a margin problem, and the two are pulling in opposite directions. The battery giant's third-quarter 2026 results, released Tuesday, showed revenue of RMB 165.221 billion — a 58.58% leap year on year. Attributable net profit, however, reached only RMB 21.246 billion, up 14.54%. That gap between top-line expansion and bottom-line delivery sits at the heart of the investment case, and no single trading session settles it.

Reuters noted the profit increase was the slowest in nearly two years and fell short of analyst expectations. The culprits it identified: intensifying competition in the battery sector and cooling Chinese car sales. The numbers landed hard, triggering a sharp selloff.

Two Listings, Two Verdicts

JPMorgan's response was not uniform across CATL's share classes. The bank downgraded the Hong Kong-listed stock from "Overweight" to "Neutral" on Tuesday, citing a faster-than-expected deterioration in battery-industry profitability. Its price target was cut to HK$500 from HK$725, according to media reports. The A-shares, by contrast, kept their "Overweight" rating.

That split matters. A cautious view on sector margins did not translate into a blanket verdict on every CATL security, so the Hong Kong downgrade should not be read across the entire company.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Market Share Slips Even as Sales Climb

Competitive pressure shows up in more than the income statement. Reuters reported that CATL's share of China's installed traction-battery market slid from 49.8% in January to 40.9% in September. A company can grow in absolute terms while ceding ground to rivals — and if that trend persists, the economics of each additional sale could weaken further.

Cash generation adds another wrinkle. Operating cash flow fell 23.60% year on year over the first nine months, according to media reports. Profit growth and cash flow are distinct measures, and the most convincing improvement would pair stronger earnings with a stabilizing operating cash flow. Progress on just one metric would carry less weight.

Heavy Trucks as the Next Demand Test

The heavy-truck business offers a tangible counterpoint to the margin worries. At Tuesday's launch of the Tianxing II battery platform, CATL disclosed signed initial orders covering 13,000 heavy trucks — a firmer demand signal than a product announcement alone. Reuters also reported that the Qiji system can swap a truck battery in roughly five minutes. The commercial opportunity lies in converting that technology, alongside a growing swap network, into additional business; orders by themselves say nothing yet about future earnings.

Management has set a year-end target of 900 swap stations for heavy trucks in China, with 2,000 planned for 2027. Both figures are build-out goals, not installed totals. Station counts can chart the strategy's progress, but they do not by themselves determine its profitability.

Buybacks Don't Answer the Earnings Question

Share repurchases continued yesterday, with the acquired stock earmarked for cancellation, according to media reports. That is relevant to the capital structure but does nothing to resolve the question of future earnings quality.

For investors, the test ahead is whether the gap between revenue and profit growth narrows. As long as the business expands substantially faster than its bottom line, additional scale is not sufficient proof of stronger earning power. Convergence of the two growth rates would signal that CATL is converting its expansion into economic value. Until then, the recovery in the share price — up 7.8% in the primary source's account of the session, with the secondary source citing a 3.2% gain — rests on demand momentum rather than demonstrated earnings leverage.
