Commerzbank Balances Record Profit Against Cautious Analyst Reappraisal
Published on 11/07/2026 at 18:32 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank has reaffirmed its full-year 2026 net profit target of at least EUR 3.4 billion, even as it trimmed its net interest income outlook and absorbed a downgrade from DZ Bank. The lender now expects net interest income of around EUR 8.5 billion, down from its previous guidance of roughly EUR 8.6 billion, while holding firm on its revenue projection of approximately EUR 13.2 billion.
The confirmation came alongside third-quarter figures that showed net profit climbing 45% to EUR 859 million. Operating profit advanced 25% to EUR 1.312 billion. Over the first nine months of the year, net profit rose 41% to EUR 2.7 billion.
Shareholder returns remain a central plank of the bank's strategy. Commerzbank is targeting a capital return of about EUR 3.2 billion for the 2026 financial year, a goal it set out on Thursday. That ambition sits alongside an already active buyback programme, which the bank has been pressing ahead with in recent weeks.
Between 26 and 30 October, the bank repurchased roughly 3.3 million of its own shares, according to a mandatory disclosure published on Monday. Cumulative purchases since the programme began on 4 September reached about 21.3 million shares through 30 October.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
On the regulatory front, Commerzbank received some relief. The ECB lowered the bank's additional Pillar 2 capital requirement for 2027 by 5 basis points, bringing it to 2.10%, a development the lender announced on 27 October.
Ownership structure is another moving part. Reuters reported on Thursday that Commerzbank is preparing for a takeover and gradual integration into the UniCredit group. CEO Bettina Orlopp described contacts at management level as constructive. Under the reported scenario, Commerzbank could first be consolidated as a subsidiary, with a later merger with UniCredit's HVB unit possible; further regulatory approvals were still pending.
BlackRock, meanwhile, disclosed on Tuesday a total position in Commerzbank of 4.44%, combining voting rights and instruments, up from 4.38% in its previous notification. The figure therefore reflects more than voting rights attached to shares alone.

Analyst sentiment took a more cautious turn. DZ Bank downgraded Commerzbank from "Buy" to "Hold" on Thursday, according to media reports, and cut its fair value estimate to EUR 40 from EUR 46. The stock closed at EUR 38.00 the previous day, below that revised valuation.
Investors will get their next scheduled update on 20 November, when Commerzbank participates in the J.P. Morgan European Financials Conference in London.
