Commerzbank: Buybacks Meet a Chart Line, a Downgrade and a Mailand Deadline
Published on 10/26/2026 at 22:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank shares drew two very different kinds of support on Friday. One came from the wider market, where a surprise improvement in the Ifo business climate index lifted German equities after a weak prior week and gave bank stocks a lift on hopes for rate-sensitive names ahead of upcoming Fed and ECB decisions. The other came from the bank itself, which disclosed another week of share purchases under its buyback programme.
The stock rose 2.8% on the session, according to the market report. A separate reading put the advance at 2.5% to EUR 37.04 — either way, a rebound that leaves the shares hovering just above a technical zone now under close scrutiny.
The buyback, by the numbers
Between 19 and 23 October, Commerzbank acquired 3,681,593 of its own shares across venues including Xetra, Cboe, Turquoise and Aquis. Since the programme began on 4 September 2026 — announced on 3 September — cumulative repurchases have reached 17,952,703 shares. The full programme is sized at up to EUR 1.2 billion.
One distinction matters here: the latest notice documents executed purchases within an existing programme. It does not herald a new one. And the day's gain cannot be pinned on the buyback alone — the friendly market and sector backdrop stands as an independent driver, with the repurchase adding a company-level layer on top.
A chart line between two zones
For chart watchers, the pivot is the support band between EUR 36.30 and EUR 38.40. The stock briefly broke below it in recent days before recovering, and the defence of that range now serves as the foundation for any further upside. Hold it, and the recent highs come back into play — a theoretical upside of roughly 16% from current levels. Lose it decisively, and the next meaningful floor sits far lower, in a zone analysts place between EUR 28.90 and EUR 30.90.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
The average purchase price on 23 October was EUR 35.8258, a figure that lays bare how deep the recent soft patch ran. Daily buyback volume alone, the sceptics note, is not necessarily enough to absorb broader market swings.
UniCredit's green light, and the waiting game
The European Central Bank on 15 October 2026 authorised UniCredit to raise its stake in Commerzbank above 30%. The Italian lender aims to control around 50% of voting rights by year-end. Yet the approval produced no sustained jump in the share price — the stock slipped below a key upward trendline before buybacks and early bargain hunters steadied it.
That muted reaction points to a degree of fatigue in takeover speculation. The central risk is a drawn-out affair: should UniCredit stretch out the build-up or erect strategic hurdles, the stock loses its main catalyst for re-rating. Bulls, for their part, lean on the combination of corporate repurchases steadily shrinking the free float and a strategic anchor shareholder limiting supply from larger holders — with every dip potentially seized by players betting on a formal offer or an improved one.
Barclays pours cold water on the interest-income story
Against the cheerful tape sits a more cautious call. On Thursday, Barclays cut its rating from "Overweight" to "Equal Weight" and trimmed its price target to EUR 41 from EUR 42. Analyst Paola Sabbione expects a less pronounced improvement in net interest income for the third quarter, citing tougher deposit competition in Germany as a drag.
That shifts attention to how much of the broadly supportive environment for bank stocks actually reaches Commerzbank's own business.
5 November as the arbiter
The next hard catalyst is the third-quarter report, scheduled for 5 November 2026. Until then, the executed buybacks stand as confirmed corporate news alongside the more guarded interest-income expectations. The coming weeks therefore hinge on two things at once: whether the EUR 36.30–38.40 band holds, and whether the operating numbers justify the optimism that the market and the buyback have together supplied.
