Commerzbank's Deposit Battle Trims Interest Forecast, but Profit Pledge Survives
Published on 11/05/2026 at 17:50 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank shares came under pressure on Thursday as a tougher fight for customer deposits forced the lender to shade its net interest income guidance for 2026, overshadowing a quarter in which earnings jumped by nearly half. The stock's reaction was reported at -4.7% in one account and -2.8% in another, with the pullback attributed to the trimmed interest outlook following the quarterly release.
A Narrower Forecast, Not a Lower Profit Target
The Frankfurt-based bank now expects net interest income of around EUR 8.5 billion for 2026, down from roughly EUR 8.6 billion previously. Management pointed to intensifying competition for deposits as the driver.
That distinction matters for how the update should be read. Commerzbank trimmed one revenue line rather than its headline earnings commitment. Its profit target of at least EUR 3.4 billion for 2026, alongside expected revenues of around EUR 13.2 billion, was reaffirmed, according to Handelsblatt. The bank is not backing away from its central annual pledge — it is simply taking a more cautious view of one earnings stream.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Not everyone was won over by the quarter's underlying trends. RBC analyst Anke Reingen described the third-quarter developments as disappointing, a verdict that helps explain why a strong set of numbers failed to lift the shares. Rising profits alone, in other words, do not tell the full story.
Earnings Momentum Stays Strong
The results themselves were robust. Group profit for the third quarter of 2026 climbed 45% to EUR 859 million. Operating profit advanced 25% to EUR 1.31 billion, showing the improvement was not confined to the bottom line.
Across the first nine months, Commerzbank posted its strongest result on record, according to company figures. Operating profit for the period reached EUR 4 billion, with net profit of EUR 2.7 billion on revenues of EUR 9.7 billion. The nine-month net figure represented a 41% increase year on year.
For investors, the picture is split down the middle. Commerzbank has delivered a sharp increase in earnings and stood by its full-year profit goal, yet the deposit war is capping expectations for interest income — and that constraint, rather than the record results already booked, is what set the tone for the shares.
