Commerzbank equity finished Friday's session at €42.39, a gain of 1.9% on the day, as a broad advance across European banking stocks lifted the sector. Diplomatic signals pointing to a de-escalation in the Middle East encouraged buyers across the continent's trading floors, and the Frankfurt lender rode that wave alongside its peers.

The stock now sits just 2.2% below its 52-week high of €43.34, a peak struck on 16 September 2026. Measured from the start of the year, the shares have returned 17%.

Nomura's Holding Slips Below Reporting Threshold

Behind the price action, a change in the shareholder register drew attention. According to a voting rights notification dated 24 September 2026, Nomura Holdings cut its stake in Commerzbank to 5.90% in aggregate, down from a previously reported 8.07%. The position breaks down into 1.15% held directly through shares and 4.75% via attributed financial instruments. The formal date on which the reportable threshold was crossed was 17 September 2026.

A second notification from Nomura Holdings Inc. followed on 25 September 2026. In Commerzbank's updated shareholder overview, the Japanese group is now listed with 0.55% in shares and 5.31% through instruments, with the relevant threshold touched on 21 September 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?

Orlopp Draws a Line Under Switzerland

Strategic commentary from the top floor added another layer to the picture. CEO Bettina Orlopp told the Swiss business daily Finanz und Wirtschaft on Friday that the bank must deliver more value for shareholders and stakeholders alike. She was equally direct on the question of disposals: a sale of the profitable Swiss business is not up for discussion.

On relations with UniCredit, the Italian lender that ranks as Commerzbank's largest shareholder, Orlopp made the case for constructive dialogue. She sketched a phased approach — an initial stage in which the two institutions could examine joint optimisations, with any later integration of HypoVereinsbank only coming into view at a second stage. The message from management is one of openness to talks, tied firmly to the value they would create for Commerzbank itself.

Berlin's Guardrails Still Frame the Debate

Any path forward remains bound by political conditions. In mid-September, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil set out requirements for UniCredit chief Andrea Orcel. Under the German government's demands, Commerzbank is to stay listed, keep its headquarters in Frankfurt and continue its mid-sized corporate lending business unchanged. Berlin also insists on retaining two supervisory board seats. At the time, UniCredit and the federal government both said they intended to keep talking — guardrails that shape every remaining option open to market participants.

Third-Quarter Figures Loom

With the strategic signals digested, attention turns back to day-to-day operations. Commerzbank publishes its financial results for the third quarter of 2026 on 5 November 2026. That interim report will show how the bank's operating earnings power has developed while the takeover debate has rumbled on — against a market valuation that leaves little room for disappointment, given the slender 2.2% gap to the 52-week peak.
