D-Wave Quantum's Second DOCOMO Deployment Lands — and the Share Price Barely Blinks

D-Wave's quantum optimization cuts NTT DOCOMO signaling by 65.3%, but shares drop 1.8% amid CFO exit and insider tax sales.

The gap between operational achievement and market reception at D-Wave Quantum has rarely been starker. On 18 August, the quantum computing firm disclosed via mandatory filing that Japanese telecom operator NTT DOCOMO has switched a second quantum-assisted application into live production. The numbers attached to the milestone are anything but trivial: in a representative scenario covering 333 base stations, three TA lists and nine tracking areas, the solution cut location-update signalling by 65.3 percent at peak load and trimmed paging signals by 7.0 percent. The optimisation itself took roughly five minutes to complete.

That is the kind of metric network operators tend to notice. Carriers run countless pilots and industrialise very few of them; DOCOMO moving a second application from testing into day-to-day operations suggests D-Wave is delivering measurable cost effects rather than mere compute capacity. For a company perpetually fending off the accusation that quantum computing remains a technology of the future, it is a concrete, defensible counter-argument.

The equity market, however, has responded with a shrug. The stock was changing hands at €14.55 on the day of the announcement, down 1.8 percent, and the pattern is by now familiar: operational progress goes largely unrewarded while peripheral concerns — most notably the previously flagged departure of CFO John Markovich, effective 2 September — weigh on sentiment. Since that announcement, the shares have shed a further 3.2 percent, adding to a roughly 19.3 percent decline booked around the appointment of Kevan P. Krysler to the board about two weeks earlier. Over a 30-day window the stock is down 15 percent, and at Monday's close of €14.83 it sat roughly 63 percent below its 52-week high of €40.41, set on 15 October 2025.

Insider activity has done little to calm nerves, even though the transactions themselves are administrative in nature. On 17 August, Chief Human Resources Officer Sophie C. Ames had 23,850 shares withheld to cover tax liabilities arising from vesting RSUs, retaining 565,159 shares afterwards, of which 536,144 remain unvested. Chief Legal Officer Diane Nguyen went through a similar process with 4,042 shares, ending up with 505,850 shares and 178,074 unvested RSUs. These are routine settlements of tax obligations, not conviction sells — but they cluster alongside the CFO's exit and feed a perception of churn in the executive ranks that investors are watching closely.

The technical picture offers little comfort. The RSI sits near 40, no longer signalling extreme oversold conditions, yet the trading range remains treacherous with an annualised 30-day volatility of 107 percent. Media reports have described a weekly loss of 16.6 percent through 28 August as investors reacted to the CFO news.

What emerges is a company whose operational narrative — customer by customer, production deployment by production deployment — looks considerably healthier than its chart suggests. The DOCOMO announcement is not a footnote; it demonstrates that D-Wave has closed the gap between quantum promise and operational reality in at least one use case. Whether the market eventually reprices those achievements is another matter entirely. There is no automatic mechanism that forces share prices to catch up with fundamentals, and at this level of volatility, patience is an uncomfortable companion.
