Deutsche Telekom: A Catalan Cloud Nod, a Raised Buyback Call and the SpaceX Question Mark

Deutsche Telekom shares fell 3.7% in a single session, and the reason had nothing to do with its own order book. The drop came as the wider telecom complex sagged under reports that SpaceX is angling to become a US mobile carrier in its own right — a reminder that for Europe's largest telco, the satellite threat and the satellite partnership run along the same orbit.

The stock's slide followed a Reuters report that SpaceX is in talks to secure access to at least 80,000 US mobile sites as the foundation for a fourth nationwide network. Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, carried the same figure. No agreement has been signed, and SpaceX has not confirmed the discussions. Media coverage explicitly tied the sector's weakness to those competitive fears.

A cloud contract that isn't signed yet

On the operational side, T-Systems Iberia has been proposed for the award of a Catalan sovereign cloud contract, according to Cinco Días. The volume is EUR 400.4 million including VAT. Telefónica was among the other bidders.

The distinction matters: what has been reported is a proposal to award, not a concluded contract. The upside is a concrete business prospect rather than a secured order, and the share price reaction to it was swallowed by the broader sector move.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Two analysts, two directions

Barclays moved first, on Tuesday. Analyst Maurice Patrick cut his price target to EUR 32 from EUR 35 while keeping an "Overweight" rating, flagging satellite technology and agentic AI as risks to sector earnings. The call paired a still-positive rating with a more cautious valuation — a concern about shifting competitive conditions, not a reported collapse in Telekom's business.

JPMorgan followed on Wednesday, also reaffirming "Overweight," but lifted its estimates for revenue, operating profit, earnings per share and free cash flow on the back of a stronger US dollar. The bank raised its own assumption for 2026 share buybacks to EUR 3.5 billion from EUR 2 billion. That figure is an analyst projection, not a company announcement, and should not be read as an approved repurchase programme.

JPMorgan also sees near-term risk from the SpaceX plans as limited, given the time, infrastructure and capital such a build-out would demand. Other analysts make a similar point: any meaningful competitive impact may be years away. Technical, financial and operational hurdles argue against equating expansion plans with immediate rivalry.

Where the partnership ends and the competition begins

The dual role is what makes the SpaceX story tricky to price. Deutsche Telekom is Starlink Mobile's most important European partner for its second-generation service, scheduled to launch in 2028. A potential additional competitor does not automatically end that cooperation — the partnership covers European satellite mobile, while the reported SpaceX network plans target the US market.

Alongside that partnership, the German carrier is hedging. On Monday, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone agreed to examine a joint bid for European satellite mobile spectrum, with services delivered directly to end devices among the goals. The wording is deliberate: what was signed was an intent to explore a joint application. No bid has been filed and no spectrum has been allocated, so the value today lies in an added option rather than a completed project.

Lab numbers and live networks

Telekom is also pushing its own technology. On Wednesday it reported initial laboratory measurements for AI-based channel estimation, showing uplink throughput 10% to 15% higher. Promising — though lab results still have to prove themselves on live networks.

For investors, the threads stay separate: the execution of the European satellite strategy, the real progress of any US network, and the operational wins such as the Catalan cloud proposal. The share price has already taken competitive risk seriously. It has not priced a completed market entry.
