Deutsche Telekom Accelerates Share Purchases as SpaceX Fears Ease and AI Targets Take Shape

Deutsche Telekom repurchased 6.7 million shares last week, topping the prior week, while its stock partly recovered from the SpaceX-driven sell-off.

Deutsche Telekom picked up the pace of its share buyback last week, repurchasing 6,707,740 of its own shares between October 12 and October 16 inclusive, according to a disclosure published yesterday. The figure tops the 4,272,881 shares bought in the prior week — a signal of faster execution rather than any announced expansion of the program.

Cumulatively, the group has now bought back 31,999,289 shares since the program began on August 10 through October 16. For investors, the distinction between a heavier weekly run-rate and a change in the program's terms matters: the week-on-week comparison shows acceleration in actual purchases, but says nothing about the tempo of the weeks ahead.

The buyback disclosure lands alongside a separate strand of the equity story. On October 5, at its AI investor day, Deutsche Telekom reaffirmed both its guidance and its medium-term targets. Outside the US, it expects roughly EUR 250 million in AI-related enterprise revenue for 2026, rising to around EUR 800 million by 2030. By that same horizon, the company has held out roughly EUR 2.5 billion in savings on indirect costs compared with 2023.

Those are targets, not results already booked. The same caveat applies to the nearer-dated automation plan: outside the US, the group is aiming for around EUR 1.1 billion in gross savings for 2027 versus 2023. The AI strategy is not confined to cost-cutting — the enterprise business outside the US is also meant to grow and contribute additional revenue.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

The gap between the two narratives is worth keeping in view. The share purchases have already been executed; the savings describe an intended operating effect. A faster buyback pace is no proof that the AI goals will be met, and the two should be assessed on their own terms.

A Partial Retreat From the SpaceX Shock

Market attention has also centered on the stock's recovery from the sell-off of October 9. According to media reports, that rebound initially rested on a reassessment of competitive risks tied to SpaceX — not on any fresh positive catalyst. A report dated October 13 characterized the countermove as a partial reversal of the first wave of concern. Fading risk perception, however, is not the same as an improvement in business prospects.

The anxiety was triggered by SpaceX's reported acquisition of spectrum in the US 800 MHz band, which raised the fear that the company could become a direct competitor to T-Mobile US. Feared competition must be distinguished from business damage that has already materialized. On Friday, the stock gained 1.1%; the single-day advance does not answer how much a potential new rival could affect the business down the road.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analyst sentiment was not uniformly bullish either. AlphaValue/Baader Europe cut its price target to EUR 34.90 from EUR 35.10 on October 12, while keeping its buy recommendation.

Two Threads, One Assessment

The buyback and the rebound should not be conflated. The report on the countermove attributed it to a partial unwinding of the SpaceX shock, while the repurchase program is a standalone element of the investment case — no substitute for weighing the operating outlook. What emerges is a mixed picture: the initial market reaction to SpaceX has been partly corrected, while buybacks and confirmed corporate targets remain in place. A fundamentally grounded re-rating will hinge on how the competitive risks and the announced business effects actually play out.
