Deutsche Telekom built 255,000 additional fiber connections in September, bringing the number of households and businesses able to access its network to 14.4 million, the company said. The figure marks a concrete step in the group's infrastructure rollout — though for shareholders it sits alongside concerns about competition in the crucial US market and longer-term technological disruption.

Reach Is Not the Same as Revenue

The September tally expands the pool of potential users of the fiber network. What matters for the economics is the gap between technical availability and actual take-up: a household passed is not automatically a paying fiber customer. How successfully the Bonn-based group converts its wider footprint into signed contracts will determine the commercial payoff.

In other words, the build-out is an operational gain, not a revenue or profit increase in its own right. Investors need to read network expansion and marketing as a pair. The extra reach lays a broader base for the fiber business; its financial effect depends on usage.

A New Mast, and AI in the Radio Lab

The fiber numbers were not the only operational news. On Friday the company switched on a new mobile site northwest of Osternohe on the A9 motorway, supporting both 4G and 5G — a completed step rather than an announced plan. Separately, on 21 October Deutsche Telekom, Nokia and NVIDIA reported initial lab measurements for AI-driven radio access networks, so-called AI-RAN systems. According to the companies, AI-based channel estimation delivered a typical throughput gain of 10 to 15 percent in the uplink.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

The two items sit on different levels of network development. The Osternohe site extends mobile infrastructure; the joint lab work examines how artificial intelligence can improve data transmission. The measured performance gains therefore do not amount to an improvement already achieved across the live network.

T-Systems Adds a Platform Option

Infrastructure news also came from T-Systems. On 20 October the group announced, together with Apheris, that the latter's federated networks can run on T-Systems' sovereign infrastructure, serving pharmaceutical research and studies involving healthcare data. For investors this widens the range of applications, though it addresses a different field from mobile radio. Neither a new mast nor lab measurements nor an extra platform option substitutes for scrutiny of the financials.

Verizon's Contract Haul and the US Question

Press reports have linked the stock's recent pullback, among other things, to mounting competitive pressure in the United States. Verizon reported 406,000 net new mobile contract customers for the third quarter, against 44,000 a year earlier. That fanned worries about T-Mobile US, the German group's most important earnings engine, and explains one of the drags on the share. On its own, however, it is not proof of how the US subsidiary's business has actually performed.

T-Mobile US publishes its quarterly results tomorrow, 28 October. Deutsche Telekom follows with its own third-quarter 2026 figures on 5 November. Both reports give investors a chance to place the operational rollout progress in a broader earnings context.

Barclays Keeps the Rating, Cuts the Target

Longer-term technology also feeds into the valuation. Barclays analyst Maurice Patrick flagged risks to the sector from satellite technology and agentic AI on 20 October, cutting his price target for Deutsche Telekom to EUR 32 from EUR 35 while keeping an "Overweight" rating. A lower target paired with an unchanged positive stance captures the balanced view: progress in the existing business set against technological risk.

The fiber update thus provides a tangible operational plus. What remains decisive for the investment case is whether Deutsche Telekom can monetize its growing network reach — and defend its key US earnings pillar against the competition.
