Deutsche Telekom shares fell 3.7% on Friday as investors weighed the prospect of fresh US wireless competition against a more constructive set of analyst calls and early progress on network technology. The decline, reported by dpa-AFX, was tied to SpaceX's ambitions to build another mobile network — a threat that reaches Deutsche Telekom through its majority stake in T-Mobile US.

At the heart of the selling pressure are reports that SpaceX has been in talks over access to at least 80,000 mobile sites, according to Bloomberg. Reuters likewise reported strain on US telecom stocks as plans for an additional network took shape. For Deutsche Telekom, the read-across is direct: anything that unsettles the US wireless market lands on its largest profit engine.

Two Houses, One Rating, Different Accents

The analyst community is not running for the exits. JPMorgan's Akhil Dattani reaffirmed an "Overweight" rating on Wednesday and lifted his medium-term estimates, raising his assumed volume of Deutsche Telekom share buybacks for 2026 to EUR 3.5 billion from EUR 2 billion. That figure is an analyst projection, not a change to the company's announced repurchase programme — a distinction that matters when reading the headline.

Barclays took a different tack on Tuesday, cutting its price target to EUR 32 from EUR 35 while keeping "Overweight." Analyst Maurice Patrick pointed to technological risks facing the sector, naming satellite technology and agentic AI as the culprits. The two positions are not contradictory calls: both houses remain positive on the stock. What separates them is emphasis — one on capital returns, the other on structural uncertainty.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

A Lab Result, Not Yet a Network

Technology is not only a threat in this story. Deutsche Telekom, together with Nokia and NVIDIA, reported initial lab measurements on Wednesday for AI-based uplink channel estimation, showing typical throughput gains of 10–15%. Field testing is the planned next step.

Those numbers demonstrate progress under controlled conditions, not a live deployment. For investors, the boundary is worth holding onto: a technical proof of concept does not translate automatically into business results, and the gap between lab and field is where such claims usually get tested.

The company is widening its commercial footprint as well. On Wednesday it unveiled CyberProtect for smaller businesses, pricing annual coverage at roughly EUR 2,500 for a mid-sized company running 25 devices. The launch opens another avenue for customer revenue, though a product announcement on its own offers no measurable contribution to earnings.

What the Coming Reports Can and Cannot Settle

The next hard datapoints arrive quickly. T-Mobile US reports on 28 October, followed by Deutsche Telekom's third-quarter 2026 figures on 5 November. Both land after the latest re-rating of competitive risk, giving investors a read on how the business has actually performed — without answering definitively what new wireless entrants might mean down the road.

The consensus published by Deutsche Telekom sets the bar, and adjusted EBITDA AL is the line to watch. Meeting or beating it would shift the conversation back toward operating momentum. Falling short would raise the question of whether near-term operational strain deserves more weight alongside the longer-term technology worries.

If earnings hold up, framing the pullback as a technology-driven reassessment of risk remains plausible. If adjusted EBITDA AL misses, that explanation alone carries less conviction. The question for shareholders is not whether satellite technology is a threat or an opportunity in the abstract — it is whether Deutsche Telekom delivers the earnings power they expect while the competitive ground may be shifting beneath it.
