Deutsche Telekom Chases Satellite Frequencies and AI Scale While the Stock Sits 19% Below Its Peak

Deutsche Telekom is quietly exploring a satellite-to-mobile venture alongside three of Europe's other telecom heavyweights, even as it pushes an aggressive artificial-intelligence agenda and absorbs the fallout from Elliott Investment Management's newly disclosed stake.
According to Reuters, the Bonn-based carrier is in early-stage talks with Orange, Vodafone Group and Telefónica about forming a consortium to bid for satellite-to-mobile spectrum, with an eye on an upcoming EU frequency auction. No final decisions have been taken, and a binding agreement remains a long way off.
The mere fact that the four largest European telecom groups are weighing a joint approach says plenty about how quickly direct satellite-to-handset connectivity has moved up the industry's agenda. Such links are seen as a complement to terrestrial networks rather than a replacement, particularly in regions where coverage is thin. Pooling resources for a spectrum bid could lower costs and give the group more leverage when negotiating with satellite operators.
Brand Consolidation and a Leadership Reshuffle
Running in parallel, Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead with a brand overhaul in southeastern Europe. Its Greek subsidiary, OTE Group, is gradually folding its COSMOTE TELEKOM brand under the Telekom name, with the official campaign switch scheduled for 8 September. The move forms part of a broader series of organizational adjustments that have followed the leadership changes announced roughly a week ago.
Those changes sit alongside the disclosure, about a week ago, that Elliott has built a position in the company. The activist investor is pressing for an end to a possible merger with US subsidiary T-Mobile US, according to Reuters — an issue that has weighed on the shares ever since and continues to hum in the background of the current weakness.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Höttges Warns of an AI "Bubble of Skepticism"
On a different front, Telekom chief executive Tim Höttges used the Digital X 2026 conference in Cologne to caution against what he called a "bubble of skepticism" surrounding artificial intelligence. More than 6,000 visitors attended the event, where Höttges made the case for greater boldness in adopting AI across Germany.
The numbers behind that argument are substantial. Research by the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) suggests generative AI could unlock as much as EUR 330 billion in additional gross value added for German industry.
Deutsche Telekom is not confining its AI ambitions to rhetoric. The group says its in-house AI factory is running at a high level of utilization, and it has upgraded prepaid plans with larger data packages. T-Mobile, meanwhile, is using AI to coordinate faster relief in disaster situations, according to company statements — placing the group squarely in the theme that dominated this year's conference.
Höttges's warning lands at a moment when many companies are scrutinizing AI spending with fresh skepticism, even as the potential value creation remains large. His stance puts Deutsche Telekom firmly in the camp of those favoring aggressive investment, both in its own infrastructure and in customer-facing products. The operational updates on the AI factory and the prepaid upgrades suggest the technology is embedded across several business lines, not just in conference speeches.
What the Chart Says
Investors, however, have yet to reward the strategy. The stock closed Wednesday at EUR 27.90, down 1.2% on the previous day. Over the week it has shed 3.5%, and it trades 2.6% below its 200-day moving average. Measured against its 52-week high of EUR 34.35, reached at the end of February, the shares are now 19% lower.
The longer view is mixed: the stock is up 0.4% year-to-date, but down 7.0% over twelve months.
Taken together — Elliott's opposition to the T-Mobile US merger, the ongoing management reshuffle, the satellite spectrum initiative and the AI investment drive — the picture is of a company maneuvering on several strategic fronts at once. For shareholders, the question is whether the early talks on the frequency auction turn into a concrete project, or whether they remain, as so many industry consortia do, a statement of intent.
