Deutsche Telekom Closes Volkswagen Vehicle-Logistics Pilot While Racking Up 72 New 5G Sites
Published on 10/28/2026 at 17:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom wrapped up its AutoLog automated vehicle-logistics project with Volkswagen, Unikie and BIBA, the company said, capping more than two years of trials run under real-world conditions near the port of Emden. The same day brought a separate operational update: 72 new mobile sites went live in September and capacity was lifted at 503 existing ones.
The two announcements sit at different points on the same arc. AutoLog is a research payoff, showing where Telekom's public 5G network and edge cloud can fit into industrial workflows. The build-out numbers are the day-to-day grind of expanding and densifying the grid that such applications would eventually run on.
What the Emden Trial Actually Tested
Funded by the BMV, AutoLog deliberately avoided testing automated vehicle movements in isolation. Partners folded mixed traffic and integration with existing logistics processes into the trials, so the question was never whether a car could drive itself, but whether automated sequences could slot into an operation already in use.
The technical stack combined Unikie's Marshalling Solution, which coordinated the vehicles, with Telekom's public 5G network and an edge cloud. Telekom's contribution is best read as one component of a broader automation package rather than a standalone product — the trial tied vehicle control, the communications network and shop-floor integration into a single system. The project followed the ISO 23374 standard.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
A second pilot ran at Audi's Ingolstadt site, where participants tested automated loading of vehicles onto rail wagons. Emden covered movement under live logistics conditions including mixed traffic; Ingolstadt focused on one specific loading task. Findings from both are meant to feed further development of automated logistics processes.
Network Expansion by the Numbers
September's rollout split into two distinct efforts. New sites extend the infrastructure's footprint, while added capacity strengthens masts already in service — a distinction that matters, since the headline count of new locations alone understates the work done on the network.
Fixed-line progress came a day earlier, with 255,000 additional fiber connections built in September. On the company's own figures, 14.4 million households and businesses can now access Telekom fiber. Investors should keep technical reach and financial result apart here: coverage describes the offer on the table, not yet its contribution to revenue or profit.
Lab Gains, a Satellite Letter of Intent
Beyond physical construction, Telekom is testing technical upgrades. With Nokia and NVIDIA, it reported on October 21 that lab trials of AI-based channel estimation delivered a typical uplink throughput gain of 10 to 15 percent. A field test is the planned next step, which keeps the status clear — the result comes from the lab, so the pending trial outside that environment counts as much as the gain itself.
A different track involves Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone. The four signed a letter of intent on October 19 to examine a joint bid for frequencies for mobile satellite services in Europe. A satellite partner has yet to be chosen. The agreement is an intent to explore, not a bid already on the table, and it adds a possible further technical avenue alongside the terrestrial build-out.
November 5 as the Financial Reckoning
Third-quarter 2026 results are scheduled for November 5, 2026, which shifts attention from operational milestones to the bottom line. Both layers need separating for the stock: new sites, higher capacity and extra fiber connections evidence infrastructure expansion, while judging earnings power and the business outlook requires the actual figures. The quarterly report is the next fixed date for that.
