Deutsche Telekom Pairs a Catalan AI Rollout With a Berlin Fiber Build-Out as Analysts Split on the Upside
Published on 11/02/2026 at 11:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom is stacking up operational announcements on two fronts at once — an expanded artificial-intelligence deployment inside a Spanish bank and a fresh fiber build in the German capital — while the sell-side remains divided over how much of that activity is already priced in.
The AI thread runs through T-Systems, the group's enterprise IT arm, which has agreed with Banco Sabadell to widen the use of agent-based AI across the lender. The two partners intend to build the rollout on an open, interoperable platform, with the emphasis on day-to-day application inside a banking group rather than on developing the underlying technology for its own sake. For investors, the distinction matters: the arrangement is a working step forward, not a completed build-out, and should not be read as an earnings jump already banked.
Fiber Plans for Berlin-Britz, and a September Scorecard
On the network side, the company said Friday it will extend fiber to roughly 3,400 additional households and businesses in Berlin-Britz, with construction scheduled to begin in February 2027. Those connections are planned, not yet in the ground — a point that separates the announcement from the build-out figures Telekom published earlier in the week.
That Wednesday update put September's additions at 255,000 fiber connections, bringing the total able to order tariffs of up to 2,000 Mbit/s to 14.4 million households and businesses. The two disclosures describe different things: one is a snapshot of what has been achieved, the other a blueprint for what comes next. It is also worth keeping in mind that reach refers to the availability of fiber tariffs, not to signed customer contracts, so the headline number cannot be translated directly into revenue.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Mobile infrastructure moved in parallel. Telekom brought 72 new sites online in September and raised capacity at 503 existing locations, adding both new footprint and extra headroom on its current grid.
A Venture Bet and a Closed Pilot
Beyond customer projects, the group's strategic investment arm, T.Capital, disclosed on October 27 a contribution to the Series B funding round of Tandem Health, a Swedish health-technology company. The same period brought the close of a separate effort: together with Volkswagen, Unikie and BIBA, Telekom had spent more than two years testing automated vehicle movements under real logistics conditions. That trial is finished — unlike the Sabadell AI expansion, which is only now getting under way. A financial stake, a completed pilot and an agreed application rollout are three different kinds of exposure, and investors would do well to keep them apart.
Two Brokers, Two Views
Analyst opinion offers little consensus. Barclays' Maurice Patrick cut his price target to 32 euros from 35 on October 20, flagging risks from satellite technology and agentic AI, while keeping an "Overweight" rating — a positive stance paired with a more guarded view of the upside. JPMorgan's Akhil Dattani, by contrast, reaffirmed "Overweight" with a 38-euro target on Thursday, pointing to results and raised annual guidance ranges at US subsidiary T-Mobile US.
The Sabadell deal illustrates the tension neatly: agent-based AI shows up both as a commercial opportunity and as a risk factor in the same coverage. Being present in new technologies is not enough on its own — what counts is telling apart the projects still waiting to scale from those that have already cleared an operational milestone. The next hard datapoint arrives on 05.11.2026, when Telekom publishes its quarterly report for Q3 2026.
