Deutsche Telekom's Two-Track AI Strategy Meets a Merger Pause
Published on 10/30/2026 at 06:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom is pursuing artificial intelligence through two distinct channels at once — customer deployments and equity stakes — while a reported hold on a full tie-up with T-Mobile US gives the group room to breathe without resolving its biggest strategic question.
The clearest customer-side move came on Wednesday, when T-Systems agreed with Banco Sabadell to expand the use of agent-based AI across the Spanish lender's group. The vehicle is T-Systems' "T-AI Agentic Hub." The distinction matters for investors: the two sides have agreed on an expansion, while the bank is planning a group-wide rollout. That is not the same as a completed implementation, so the focus should sit on execution rather than on the announcement of a platform.
A day earlier, the group's investment arm T.Capital took part in the Series B funding round of Tandem Health, a Swedish healthcare AI company. Here the emphasis is capital committed rather than a platform deployed. The two steps complement each other strategically but are not economically equivalent — a customer project and a financing stake serve different purposes, and neither announcement on its own translates into a quantifiable joint earnings effect for Deutsche Telekom.
Network tests add a third strand
Beyond business applications, the Bonn-based group is also pushing AI into the mobile network itself. On 21 October it reported laboratory measurements on AI-RAN together with Nokia and NVIDIA, in which AI-based channel estimation delivered 10 to 15 percent more uplink throughput. That is a technical pointer to the technology's potential, but it remains a lab result; comparable gains in a commercial network are not yet proven. Technical progress and commercial benefit are not the same evidence.
Taken together, the announcements do not amount to a single, finished AI programme. They range from an equity investment through an agreed customer expansion to technical trials, and it is precisely these differing levels of maturity that determine how each should be read. The solid core lies in named partners, a planned group-wide platform deployment and measured technical improvements. Economic assessment, by contrast, has to separate investment, implementation and revenue — equating every AI headline with immediate additional profit would go beyond what has been confirmed.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Merger question deferred, not settled
On the structural front, Reuters reported yesterday that the group has for now shelved a formal offer for a full merger with T-Mobile US. The plan has not been abandoned outright. Bloomberg had already reported on Wednesday that Deutsche Telekom was holding off on a formal bid, with people familiar with the matter saying a later move was not ruled out. Resistance from the works council and other hurdles may have been decisive, according to Reuters.
That distinction is what investors should hold onto: the reported pause concerns the next formal step, not necessarily the strategic goal. The positive market reaction is therefore best understood as relief over temporarily lower transaction risk — not as proof that the merger question has been permanently taken off the table.
JPMorgan analyst Akhil Dattani kept Deutsche Telekom at "Overweight" with a price target of 38 euros yesterday, while still describing the uncertainty over a possible combination as a drag on the share price. His verdict limits how much the relief rally can be read into. As long as a later offer remains possible, investors have to weigh the open structural question alongside operating performance.
US unit sets the operating benchmark
T-Mobile US's already-published quarterly figures provide that backdrop. For the third quarter of 2026 the subsidiary reported service revenue of 19.4 billion US dollars, up 6 percent year on year. According to Dattani, the numbers met expectations, and the adjusted full-year guidance ranges were largely in line with consensus — leaving no signal of a fundamental reassessment of the operating business.
T-Mobile US also raised its forecast for adjusted free cash flow in 2026 to 18.7–18.8 billion US dollars. Deutsche Telekom's next scheduled date is the release of its third-quarter 2026 results on 05.11.2026.
Until then the central split remains: the US subsidiary delivers operating results, while a possible combination is a separate uncertainty. The reported pause eases that debate in the near term. It does not replace a final decision.
