Deutsche Telekom: SpaceX's Tower Talks Carry an $80 Billion Price Tag, and That Is the Point

Deutsche Telekom shares fell 3.7% yesterday as investors reacted to reports that SpaceX is negotiating access to at least 80,000 US mobile sites for what would be a fourth national carrier. The move says more about how the market is pricing future competition than about anything the Bonn-based group has actually reported — a distinction worth keeping in view.

A network is a bill, not an announcement

TD Cowen has put a number on the ambition: a nationwide terrestrial mobile network could cost more than $80 billion, spread across years of investment. That figure captures the gap between a possible market-entry strategy and a service that actually works.

Reuters reports that Starlink already generates internet revenue in sparsely populated areas. Going head-to-head with the large US carriers would still require ground infrastructure and several years of build-out; the existing satellite business does not substitute for it.

Thursday's disclosure of talks over access to the 80,000-plus sites hints at the scale of the undertaking. No agreement has been publicly confirmed. The planned acquisition of a nationwide spectrum portfolio also remains subject to FCC approval and further closing conditions. Whether the individual infrastructure and spectrum steps add up to a financed, approved whole is the open question.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

T-Mobile's head start is the counterweight

Because Deutsche Telekom holds the majority of T-Mobile US, concerns about its competitive standing transmit directly to the German stock. Analyst assessments suggest the threat may be overstated: T-Mobile has advantages in spectrum holdings and in its existing terrestrial network, an starting position that argues against treating a potential entrant as an established peer from day one.

That is not an all-clear. The risks cited for T-Mobile include price wars, competition from cable-mobile offerings and higher customer churn, alongside execution and capital-allocation concerns. The debate runs well beyond SpaceX.

Barclays trims its target, keeps its rating

On Tuesday, Barclays cut its price target on Deutsche Telekom from EUR 35 to EUR 32 while reaffirming its "Overweight" rating. The analysts flagged satellite-based offerings and AI systems as sector risks — a more cautious valuation that stops short of abandoning a fundamentally positive stance. That longer-horizon view differs from the immediate selling that followed the US headlines.

Deutsche Telekom is not standing still on the technology itself. On Monday it joined Telefónica, Orange and Vodafone in a memorandum of understanding, reported by Cinco Días, to examine a joint bid for EU mobile satellite spectrum. The initiative targets direct-to-handset satellite connections and is meant to counter Starlink's growing market position. A memorandum, though, is neither a submitted bid nor a launched service.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Two calendars, two questions

The next confirmed checkpoint comes on 5 November, when Deutsche Telekom reports third-quarter 2026 results. T-Mobile US follows with its own quarterly report on 28 October 2026.

Until those numbers land, the pressure on the stock reflects a shift in risk perception rather than reported business damage. The satellite initiative offers a strategic counterweight, but no proof yet that the company can offset any additional competition in economic terms. The steep build-out costs and pending approvals limit how much the current worries can tell us about tomorrow — they do not remove the longer-term competitive risk.
