DroneShield's German Lifeline: Policy Tailwinds Meet a Stock Still 72% Below Its Peak
Published on 09/10/2026 at 03:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deBerlin's push to shield itself from aerial sabotage has handed Europe's counter-drone specialists a fresh narrative, and DroneShield sits squarely in the frame. According to Reuters, the German government is preparing a broad anti-sabotage package aimed at hardening the country against drone strikes, cyber intrusions and other hostile acts — a response triggered by a failed drone attack on an airport. For manufacturers of counter-UAS hardware, the signal is clear: European procurement budgets are tilting their way.
Whether that political momentum translates into orders for the Australian group is another matter entirely. On the ASX, investors have been far more focused on the company's bottom line than on ministerial press releases.
A Stock That Keeps Testing Nerves
The share price tells its own story. DroneShield closed at EUR 1.06 on Wednesday, down 2.9% on the day, though it managed a 2.1% gain across the week — a tentative sign that the worst of the recent slide may be easing. The recovery looks fragile at best. Over the past 30 days the stock has shed 20%, and at EUR 1.07 it remains a shadow of its former self.
The 52-week high of EUR 3.79, set on 1 October 2025, still sits 72% above current levels. Year-to-date, the decline stands at 41%. Market capitalization has settled at roughly EUR 1 billion.
Short Sellers Circle the Most Crowded Trade on the ASX
Part of what keeps the stock twitchy is its status as the most heavily shorted name on the Australian exchange, a distinction confirmed by analysis of ASIC data. Reports of heightened regulatory scrutiny from the corporate watchdog, alongside a shift in a major shareholder's stake — the specifics of which remain undisclosed — have added to the unease. Short sellers pressing their positions have compounded the pressure on a stock already grappling with fundamental questions.

The Half-Year Report That Split the Market
Everything circles back to the numbers DroneShield released in late August. Revenue for the first half of 2026 came in at AUD 125.8 million, a 74% jump year-on-year. The company also posted a net loss of AUD 32.2 million. Recurring revenue climbed 229% to AUD 11.5 million, yet the gap between top-line growth and profitability is precisely what market watchers blame for the sell-off that followed the release. Since those results, the stock has given back 2.9%.
The balance sheet, however, offers some comfort. As of 21 August, the secured order backlog stood at AUD 240 million, while cash and term deposits reached AUD 180 million — and the company carries no debt. Management reaffirmed full-year 2026 revenue guidance of AUD 250 million to AUD 270 million.
RfRecon: The Bet That Could Change the Story
Operationally, DroneShield is leaning hard on its new RfRecon platform. Mass production is slated to ramp up in the second half of 2026, with first sales expected in the same window. If the product lands well commercially, it could offset the profitability gap that has dogged recent months and convert procurement programs announced by Germany and other governments into firm contracts.
The broader market backdrop supports that ambition. Industry analysis suggests publicly announced counter-UAS orders worldwide surpassed USD 53 billion in the first eight months of 2026 alone — evidence that the addressable market is expanding structurally, regardless of how any single stock trades on a given day.
What Has to Go Right
For DroneShield, the path forward hinges on execution. Hitting the AUD 250–270 million revenue target and crossing into profitability would go a long way toward justifying the current valuation. Until then, the short interest and unanswered questions around the changed major shareholding are likely to keep volatility elevated.
The German security package and the global order boom make a compelling case for the sector as a whole. Whether DroneShield captures its share of that wave — or watches it break elsewhere — is a question only the coming quarters can answer.
