Equinor opened its Kårstø Marine Robotics Centre on 28 October, a facility the Norwegian energy group expects to underpin annual cost savings of several hundred million NOK through the use of underwater robots and autonomous vessels. The company is tying the launch to a forward-looking economic expectation rather than to savings already banked.

The centre's debut came in the same week Equinor raised its production growth forecast for 2026 from 3% to roughly 4%, a target it confirmed on 28 October. Third-quarter 2026 adjusted operating profit came in at USD 12.35 billion, with adjusted net income of USD 2.86 billion, according to company figures. Production on an equity basis climbed 2% year on year to 2,166 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Shareholders were handed a cash dividend of USD 0.39 per share for the quarter. Equinor also pressed ahead with the fourth and final buyback tranche of the year, announced roughly two weeks ago, worth up to USD 1.125 million including shares to be repurchased from the Norwegian state for cancellation. That tranche opened on 29 October and is scheduled to close no later than 1 February 2027. A mandatory disclosure published on Tuesday confirmed executed repurchases, after which Equinor held own shares equal to 1.00% of its share capital, including stock earmarked for its employee share savings programme.

Argentina Licences Advance as Aker BP Pact Takes Shape

On the exploration front, Equinor and its partners moved into the second exploration phase for offshore licences in Argentina on Thursday. The step covers licences AUS 105 and AUS 106, with exploration drilling pencilled in for 2028–2029, though it remains contingent on environmental and regulatory processes and the necessary permits.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?

Equinor had earlier struck a separate collaboration with Aker BP on 26 October to jointly develop low-permeability reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The aim, according to media reports, is to lift recovery rates and bring additional resources into economic production.

Visund Probe Opened as Brent Slides

Regulators added a note of caution to the week. Havtil, the Norwegian offshore safety authority, opened an investigation on Wednesday into a fire in the emergency power switchgear room on the Equinor-operated Visund platform. The installation was shut down and depressurised after the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Oil prices, meanwhile, did the shares no favours. Reuters reported that results from the US midterm elections strengthened expectations of a de-escalation in the conflict between the US and Israel and Iran, stripping part of the geopolitical risk premium out of crude. Brent fell almost 10% on Wednesday, and Equinor's stock gave up 0.6% on Friday amid the weaker oil price environment.
