Equinor is pressing ahead with the last slice of its 2026 share repurchase programme, with the fourth and final tranche announced yesterday and set to open today. The remaining portion covers shares to be retired by the Norwegian state. The new leg follows the completion of the programme's third phase on 22 October.

Alongside the buybacks, the board confirmed a cash dividend of USD 0.39 per share for the third quarter of 2026. The capital-return news landed the same day as a downgrade: according to media reports, DZ Bank cut Equinor from Buy to Hold yesterday, with the analysis attributed to Werner Eisenmann.

A quarter that split the analyst community

The Q3 2026 figures published yesterday go a long way toward explaining the mixed reception. Adjusted operating income came in at USD 12.35 billion, ahead of the USD 12.19 billion consensus — a clear beat at the operating line. Net profit stood at USD 2.54 billion, with adjusted net profit of USD 2.86 billion.

The bottom line told a different story. Adjusted earnings per share reached USD 1.20, short of the USD 1.37 analysts had pencilled in. A stronger operating result, in other words, was not enough to carry the full set of profit expectations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Equinor?

Regional performance was just as uneven. International production rose sharply, output on the Norwegian Continental Shelf held roughly flat, and US volumes declined. Higher barrels do not automatically translate into a proportionally higher profit contribution, so production trends and earnings deserve to be read separately.

Cash generation offered a counterweight to the EPS miss. Operating cash flow after tax, excluding working-capital movements, climbed 53% year on year to USD 8.14 billion — a reminder of the financial muscle behind the quarter, though it does nothing to settle the longer-term production questions.

Price targets drift higher, recommendations stay put

UBS lifted its target to 450 NOK from 410 NOK today while keeping its Neutral rating — a higher bar for valuation, not a change of heart on the stock. RBC Capital Markets held its target at 420 NOK and maintained a Sector Perform stance, trimming its estimates for 2027 and 2028. RBC pointed to stronger results in Norway and in the marketing, midstream and processing business, which offset a weaker international showing. For the Johan Sverdrup field, the bank expects a faster production decline next year, in line with Equinor's own guidance — shifting attention beyond the strong reporting quarter.

The spread of targets published today runs from 380 NOK to 500 NOK. Several houses reiterated their Hold calls, while a Buy recommendation sits at the very top of the range. Higher targets, then, should not be mistaken for a broad endorsement: the question for investors is whether analysts are merely refreshing their valuations or genuinely baking in better long-term prospects.

Afrodite estimate more than doubles

On the exploration front, Equinor said today that estimated recoverable volumes at the Afrodite discovery near Kvitebjørn have risen sharply following appraisal drilling. The company now puts gas and condensate resources at 77 to 180 million barrels of oil equivalent — more than double the previous estimate, according to its own figures.

Equinor at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Equinor considers the find commercially viable and will study a possible subsea tie-back. On Monday the group also struck a strategic collaboration with Aker BP covering tight reservoirs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, with technology development, standardisation and cooperation intended to unlock such discoveries.

Opedal warns of another gas price spike

Looking at the wider European gas market, chief executive Anders Opedal cautioned yesterday, according to Reuters, that prices could spike again. Cold weather may lift demand, while depleted storage and competition for LNG cargoes threaten to squeeze supply.

Taken together, the day's developments leave a nuanced picture. Equinor's operating strength and cash flow justify some of the higher price targets, and the enlarged Afrodite estimate adds a fresh development option. For recommendations to be upgraded more widely, though, the longer-term outlook would need to convince as well — and it is precisely there that analysts remain more guarded than their reading of the completed quarter might suggest.
