Evonik Draws a Line Between Its Balance Sheet and Its Boardroom Drama
Published on 10/22/2026 at 14:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deEvonik has pushed back against claims of shaky financing, using its improved credit ratings as a counterweight to criticism from IG BCE chief Michael Vassiliadis. The rebuttal, reported by Handelsblatt on 16 October citing company sources, lands in the middle of a takeover debate that has pulled in politicians, unions and the RAG-Stiftung — yet it settles none of the questions investors actually need answered.
What the company defended was its financial standing. What it did not do was move the needle on who might own it next. Those are separate ledgers, and the distinction matters for anyone trying to value the shares.
A Union Critique That Reaches Past the Balance Sheet
Vassiliadis did not confine his fire to financing. According to the Rheinische Post, he also took aim at the RAG-Stiftung, arguing that if the foundation were to exit Evonik it would need to explain what it intends to do with the proceeds. His demand, then, concerns the use of potential sale proceeds rather than the terms of a transaction alone.
The political track has its own momentum. On 14 October, North Rhine-Westphalia's economy minister, Mona Neubaur, came out against a BASF takeover of Evonik, as the Handelsblatt reported. The same day, the state parliament rejected an SPD motion that would have examined a state stake in Evonik. Two distinct facts sit side by side here: a minister's opposition to a takeover, and a parliamentary refusal to even study a public shareholding. Neither amounts to a corporate decision, and neither foretells how the takeover question ends.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?
The RAG-Stiftung, for its part, declined to commit itself at its first round of deliberations on 9 October. It pointed to the companies and to possible bilateral talks between BASF and Evonik, according to the Handelsblatt.
Media reports also indicated the foundation stressed the importance of jobs and sites in North Rhine-Westphalia. The state government said it wants to keep the workforce in place — a political emphasis that sits well away from Evonik's credit-rating argument, focused as it is on the fallout from any change in ownership.
Assurances Are Not a Signed Deal
Reuters reported on 12 October, citing two people close to BASF, that the chemicals giant would preserve German site and employment guarantees at Evonik in the event of a takeover. That statement is explicitly conditional on a deal happening. It confirms no agreement.
The Operating Story Runs on Its Own Track
Away from the boardroom noise, Evonik has been busy at the lab bench. On Monday it launched Lypron, a rumen-stable lysine solution for targeted amino acid supply in ruminants, which Sipena is to manufacture exclusively. The company has also rolled out stiffer VESTAKEEP PEEK material grades aimed at long-term dental prosthetics, and added Lypron to its amino acid balancing concept for ruminants.
None of those announcements came with a revenue or earnings figure attached. Product news, in other words, is not the same as demonstrated financial success — a gap investors would do well to keep in mind.
Evonik at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
There is also the recycling initiative launched a little over a week ago with Toyotsu Chemiplas and Sanyo Chemical in Japan. The partners intend to convert old polyurethane foam into recycled polyols and amines for new polyurethane products. It is a venture with a defined goal, not a quantified contribution to the bottom line.
3 November Is the Date That Counts
The next confirmed item on the calendar is third-quarter 2026 results, scheduled for 3 November 2026. That report gives shareholders a yardstick for the operating side of the story — the first question. It is not an announced decision date for the second, the takeover question, which continues to hinge on financing arguments, owner interests and political demands that each need to be weighed on their own terms.
