Evonik delivered the kind of quarterly headline that usually gets a chemicals stock moving: adjusted EBITDA for the third quarter of 2026 jumped 40% year on year to EUR 629 million. Yet the two brokerage notes that followed in quick succession tell a more guarded story, and neither of them treats the earnings leap as a reason to turn bullish.

Deutsche Bank Research lifted its price target on the Essen-based group from EUR 18 to EUR 22 today while keeping a Hold rating, with analyst Virginie Boucher-Ferte recalibrating her estimates to the Q3 figures. A day earlier, JPMorgan had raised its own target from EUR 14 to EUR 15 — and stuck with Underweight. The stock currently trades at EUR 21.48, comfortably above JPMorgan's revised objective, which underscores how far the cautious view sits from the market's own pricing.

Two Ways of Reading the Same Beat

The divergence between the two houses comes down to what each thinks matters more after a quarter like this. Boucher-Ferte sees takeover interest underpinning the shares, though she flags limited further upside given Evonik's refusal to enter formal negotiations with BASF. Chetan Udeshi, her counterpart at JPMorgan, is focused on what comes next on the cost side: restructuring charges expected in the 2027/28 financial year that could weigh on free cash flow.

That distinction — between adjusted operating profit and the cash that actually lands in the till — sits at the heart of the cautious camp's argument. A stronger adjusted EBITDA line does not automatically translate into stronger free cash flow, and JPMorgan's note sets the improved earnings picture against burdens that stretch beyond the current financial year. The charges remain an expectation rather than a reported result for the year in question.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evonik?

Guidance Points Up, but Only for One Metric

Evonik itself gave investors reason for optimism on the operating side. Management expects adjusted EBITDA for 2026 to land in the upper half of the EUR 2.0 billion to EUR 2.2 billion range. That forecast applies explicitly to the adjusted earnings measure, not to free cash flow — a nuance that matters given the restructuring costs on the horizon.

The company also pointed to persistently weak economic growth and geopolitical uncertainty as the backdrop against which these numbers are being generated. In other words, the earnings improvement is arriving in a difficult environment, not because the environment has turned friendly.

Rettig's Standalone Case

Interim chief Claus Rettig used an interview with the FAZ today to flesh out the portfolio reshaping that he argues can deliver more value than BASF's offer. That bid, reaffirmed at EUR 24 per share, is the number Rettig says Evonik can beat through its own plan.

The carve-out of Syneqt, valued at 9 to 10 times operating earnings, provides one yardstick for what that plan might be worth — though the multiple on its own does not reveal a concrete sale proceeds figure. Separately, the separation of Oxeno and the C4 chemicals business is a distinct project with its own terms. Neither has been completed, and the valuation markers cited so far are no substitute for a signed deal.

Ownership structure is shifting in parallel: the RAG-Stiftung's stake in Evonik is set to fall to 25.1% as planned. Portfolio and shareholder base are therefore moving on separate tracks, and each deserves its own assessment.

Evonik at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Growth Spending, Not Shopping

On the expansion front, Rettig said Evonik is reviewing three projects in India and one in Singapore. Investments of this type typically run in the mid-double-digit to low-triple-digit millions. Review, however, is not a decision to proceed.

Acquisitions remain an option — Rettig described Evonik as prepared for value-accretive bolt-ons but not actively pursuing them. No imminent purchase is on the table. The emphasis instead falls on concrete portfolio changes and the evaluation of the company's own investment opportunities, which gives investors a clearer sense of where management's attention lies.

What the Market Still Has to Prove

For shareholders, the question is no longer simply whether Evonik can earn more. It is how much cash remains available once the restructuring bill comes due — the second half of the earnings story that JPMorgan's Underweight rating is built around. The quarterly figures document the operating improvement; whether that strength carries through to free cash flow is the test still outstanding, and it is precisely there that the cautious recommendation finds its footing.
