Evotec has roughly 20 active partnership opportunities in the pipeline, together worth about EUR 1 billion in potential value, management said on a conference call. Whether those talks convert into signed deals — and then into revenue — has become the central test for investors weighing the German biotech's recovery.

The numbers behind the pitch are improving. According to the company, potential business contacts rose by more than 45%, and the customer base grew by around 10%. That widens the runway for further agreements, provided the interest can be translated into concrete projects. How much of the EUR 1 billion actually gets contracted, and when revenue might follow, remains open — leaving shareholders to decide whether to bet on successful closings or to wait for harder evidence of the economic contribution.

Berenberg Lifts Target, Keeps Rating

Berenberg analyst Christian Ehmann called the third quarter solid, according to dpa-AFX, and raised his price target to EUR 3.75 from EUR 3.60 while reaffirming a "Hold" rating. The study was published yesterday. The higher target did not come with a change in investment recommendation. The stock was up 3.4% today; no link between the analyst action and the day's move has been established.

Horizon Runs Ahead of Schedule

Progress on the restructuring front supports the case. Evotec said the Horizon program is ahead of plan, with more than 20% of the targeted annual savings of EUR 75 million achieved by the end of September. Roughly half of the planned job measures had been implemented by then, and three of the four planned site closures were expected to be completed by year-end. The full annual savings effect is due by the end of 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Evotec?

The workforce reduction is well advanced: around 400 of the 800 planned positions had already been cut. The fourth site closure is slated for the first quarter of 2027, giving investors a concrete calendar against which to check whether management keeps to its announced timetable.

Vertex Taps Just – Evotec Biologics

On the commercial side, Vertex Pharmaceuticals has selected Just – Evotec Biologics for the commercial manufacturing of povetacicept, with production planned at the J.POD site in Redmond. The mandate gives the site's build-out a tangible business anchor.

That expansion carries a built-in cost. Evotec plans a third manufacturing line in Redmond for 2027, and installing it will require a temporary production pause that could weigh on that year's revenue — a trade-off between near-term disruption and later capacity.

Base Business Growth and Lumpy Milestones

Net sales in the D&PD base business climbed 24% in the first nine months of 2026, a sign of renewed momentum in that segment. The development gains weight if it produces a sustained revenue contribution while Evotec simultaneously lowers its cost base.

Timing remains a wildcard. Milestone payments can swing individual reporting periods, and management expects significantly fewer of them in the fourth quarter than in the prior quarter. A stronger base business would need to cushion such fluctuations so that operating progress can be judged more reliably.

The Balance Sheet and the Bear Case

As of September 30, 2026, the company held liquidity of EUR 400.9 million. How ongoing losses, restructuring and expansion affect cash consumption will determine how much room that buffer really buys.

The bear case starts with delayed contract signings. If partnership opportunities stay open longer, Evotec would have to deliver the planned improvement from the existing business and cost cuts — a harder task if milestone payments also come in lower. A heavier-than-expected hit from the Redmond pause would sharpen the focus on financing headroom.

Governance and Ownership Shifts

There has also been a change at the top of the science organization: on Sunday, Joanna Holbrook succeeded Cord Dohrmann as Chief Scientific Officer and joined the management board.

On the ownership side, a voting-rights notification published Wednesday showed JPMorgan Chase & Co. holding a smaller overall position of 6.11%, down from 6.54%. The stake includes voting rights from shares as well as instruments, with the notification citing October 30 as the date the threshold was reached or crossed.

What Investors Will Watch

The bullish scenario has new partnerships landing while Horizon delivers on schedule, so that additional revenue meets a lower cost base. The Vertex selection supports that picture by tying Redmond's expansion to a named commercial program.

Execution is the swing factor. Contracts signed and costs cut in tandem would strengthen the earnings base; if one process stalls, the other would have to deliver more. Site closures — three by the end of 2026 and the last in the first quarter of 2027 — provide the next checkpoints.
