Graphite One has picked up another development assignment from the Defense Logistics Agency, the Pentagon's logistics arm, extending a working relationship that dates back to 2023. The award centers on domestic carbon materials built for high-temperature defense applications — but it came without a stated contract value, leaving investors with little to plug into a valuation model.

What the Alaska Subsidiary Will Actually Do

The work went to Graphite One (Alaska), the company's US subsidiary. At its core is a demonstration project probing advanced carbon composites derived from the Graphite Creek deposit in Alaska, aimed at thermal management systems built to withstand extreme heat in defense settings.

The scope covers processing the material, assessing how it performs thermally, and producing the corresponding performance reports. The Idaho National Laboratory is lined up as a partner alongside technical advisers, with project management set to run through Graphite One Advanced Systems.

That makes this a development-and-evaluation exercise rather than a confirmed large-scale commercial deployment. For shareholders, the significance lies chiefly in the further testing of a potential end market — and in the resilient US supply chains the project is meant to support.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

Three Contracts, Three Different Scopes

By the company's own account, this marks the third development contract with the Defense Logistics Agency since 2023, so the new award builds on an existing relationship rather than opening a fresh one. Its precise financial contribution cannot be pinned down from the announcement.

The earlier awards are instructive but not comparable. In 2023 Graphite One drew a $37.5 million grant under the Defense Production Act, followed by a separate DLA contract worth $4.7 million for graphite- and graphene-based fire suppressants. Those sums covered different undertakings entirely, so they offer no yardstick for the size of the contract disclosed today. Payment terms, testing deadlines and specific performance thresholds for the new assignment were likewise left unstated.

Development Work Is Not Project Finance

Graphite One's broader US supply-chain strategy spans mining, transport, processing and possible material recovery. Executing it remains contingent on project financing — a separate matter from the development contract just awarded.

Graphite Creek is slated to begin production from 2029, subject to the necessary permits. Today's award, by contrast, concerns material development and its evaluation. Two levels therefore need to be kept apart when weighing an investment case: the renewed DLA cooperation strengthens the defense-related development outlook, while whether it grows into economically meaningful business depends on test results and further execution. No quantified contribution has been demonstrated so far.

Pushback in Teller and Brevig Mission

Meanwhile, the proposed Graphite Creek mine is meeting environmental and livelihood concerns in the local public-participation process. At a hearing held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, media reports on Thursday said, water quality, wildlife and cultural sites took center stage. Comments on the environmental impact statement are being accepted through November 1, 2026.

The local hearing also examined possible effects on residents' traditional subsistence way of life, so the reservations touched both natural resources and culturally significant places around the proposed mining project. Earlier, on October 15, media had reported a mixed mood on the ground, with resistance to the venture coming from Teller and Brevig Mission — the same day the Army Corps opened the public comment period on the environmental review.

The agency has laid out a concrete timetable: the final environmental review report is due September 10, 2027, with a decision scheduled for September 24, 2027.

The Company's Counterweight: Strategic Value

Graphite One made its own case on October 19, stressing Graphite Creek's potential role in strengthening US graphite supply. The trigger was an opinion piece published October 16 in which Victoria Coates, a former White House staffer, named the project.

That company statement highlighted the venture's strategic importance; it announced no new contract, no funding commitment and no achieved project milestone. Graphite One restated its planned integrated supply chain running from Alaska to Ohio, whose execution remains subject to financing.
