Graphite One Wins Third DLA Development Pact as Graphite Creek Permitting Clock Starts Ticking
Published on 10/29/2026 at 00:20 | Editorial boerse-global.deGraphite One's US subsidiary has landed another research-and-development agreement with the Defense Logistics Agency, the company said Monday — the third such deal with the Pentagon's logistics arm since 2023. The wholly owned Graphite One (Alaska) unit will develop and evaluate domestically sourced advanced carbon materials, with the work centered on high-temperature thermal management for defense applications.
The program draws on material from the Graphite Creek deposit and spans materials processing, thermal testing and performance reporting. Graphite One will team up with the Idaho National Laboratory and industry technical advisers on the effort, which the company describes as a development and evaluation program aimed at gauging the materials' suitability for high-temperature defense uses.
Investors should be clear about what the award does and does not represent. It is a technical work assignment, not a completed project financing and not a decision on the proposed mine. Progress on materials development answers different questions than the permitting and funding tracks that govern the broader Alaska-to-Ohio supply chain.
A separate regulatory track with hard dates
While the laboratory work moves ahead, the Graphite Creek mine faces a full environmental review. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing an environmental impact statement, citing the project's significant potential for substantial effects. The plans envisage permanent impacts on 387 acres of wetlands and temporary impacts on 140.7 acres.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?
Public input is being gathered on a defined timetable. A public meeting in Nome produced a mixed local reception, according to media reports, while Teller and Brevig Mission voiced clear opposition. Written comments are requested by November 1, 2026. The Corps has set September 10, 2027 as its target for the final environmental impact statement, with a permit decision to follow on September 24, 2027.
Those dates belong to the review process and should not be read as an approval signal. For anyone assessing the project, two distinct questions matter: whether the materials are technically fit for purpose, and whether the proposed mining operation clears environmental scrutiny. Advances on one front do not settle the other.
Funding caveat still in place
Graphite One has been making its strategic case in public. On October 19 the company highlighted Graphite Creek's potential role in American graphite supply chains, prompted by an October 16 opinion piece from former White House staffer Victoria Coates. The strategy links Alaska raw material with processing in Ohio — and it remains subject to financing.
Graphite One at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
That caveat is the third leg of the story, alongside the development award and the environmental review. Shares rose 7.1% today, but the move does nothing to collapse the distinctions that matter: the DLA deal opens a concrete technical workstream, while the mine's permitting and the supply chain's funding each stand on their own footing.
