Infineon has put hard numbers behind its gallium nitride ambitions, confirming a EUR 1.1 billion investment in its Villach site to build what the company describes as the world's first high-volume production line for GaN power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. The plant is slated to begin output at the end of 2027, with the build-out running through 2034 — meaning the announcement pairs a near-term production date with a much longer capital spending horizon. Reuters reports the output is destined for data centers, underscoring where Infineon sees the sharpest demand for power chips.

Shares reacted positively, climbing 4.2% to EUR 52.95.

An 800-Volt Thread Runs Through the Portfolio

The common denominator across Infineon's latest announcements is the 800-volt DC architecture that is becoming standard in AI data centers. On October 21, the chipmaker expanded its collaboration with NVIDIA around GaN-based power conversion systems, with high-voltage intermediate bus converters at the center of the work. The NVIDIA tie-up sits alongside the Villach expansion and the Enphase Energy deal among the GaN activities Infineon has disclosed.

To help customers design around that architecture, Infineon also unveiled a high-voltage reference design — a power distribution board that lets clients evaluate supply systems at ±400 V and 800 V. It is a reference design rather than a product launch, intended for testing and validation.

Enphase Puts Infineon's 900-Volt Switches to Work

On the partner front, Enphase Energy said it will use Infineon's bidirectional monolithic 900 V GaN switches in power modules for solid-state transformers. The components have already been tested and are being integrated into Enphase development builds — a concrete, named application for the GaN technology. NVIDIA's focus, by contrast, is on high-voltage intermediate bus converters for the DC architecture of AI data centers.

Under the Hood of Electric Vehicles

Infineon's news flow was not confined to the data center. The company brought its LinearFET MOSFET technology to market, aimed at semiconductor-based power distribution systems in electric and software-defined vehicles. A separate high-voltage reference design for battery management pairs the AURIX TC4x microcontroller with a parallel processing unit, allowing battery models to run directly on the battery management unit.

Further technology updates included ENDOPACK chip embedding for traction inverters and expanded OptiMOS-7 automotive MOSFETs. Infineon also flagged solutions and semiconductor innovations in physical AI, robotics, mobility and AI power supply for electronica, running November 10–13 in Munich.
