Infineon Pins Growth Hopes on GaN Power Chips as Vienna Backs Villach Fab With EUR 319 Million
Published on 11/02/2026 at 02:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon's push into gallium nitride power semiconductors has secured a substantial state backer. The Republic of Austria is contributing EUR 319 million to the company's planned GaN plant in Villach, part of a broader EUR 1.1 billion investment programme the chipmaker intends to channel into existing cleanroom space at the site through 2034.
The Villach facility is slated to host Europe's first high-volume production of GaN power semiconductors on 300-mm wafers, with output scheduled to begin by the end of 2027.
AI data centres become a second front
Alongside the manufacturing build-out, Infineon has been deepening its ties with NVIDIA. The two companies expanded their collaboration on October 21, focusing on GaN-based power conversion systems for 800-volt direct-current architectures — specifically a high-voltage intermediate circuit converter aimed at AI data centres.
The partnership extends beyond hardware. On October 22, Infineon joined forces with NVIDIA, Microsoft and UnternehmerTUM Accelerator to launch the Physical AI Growth Lab, a free support programme for European start-ups working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI. Participants give up no equity, and the programme is set to run from January to April 2027.

Warstein lab adds capacity
Infineon also opened a new office and laboratory building in Warstein on Wednesday. Around 350 employees are expected to move in, and the complex includes roughly 1,200 square metres of laboratory space.
Intel's guidance casts a shadow over the sector
None of this shielded the stock from a sector-wide pullback. Infineon shares fell 4.5% on Friday, caught in the downdraft from Intel's disappointing revenue outlook. The US chipmaker guided to revenue of USD 15 billion to USD 16 billion, well short of the USD 17.1 billion analysts had pencilled in.
Press reports also tied the weakness in European semiconductor names to unease over the scale of AI spending at major US technology companies, with Amazon and Alphabet singled out. Infineon numbered among the DAX decliners, though the pressure stemmed from the industry backdrop rather than any fresh company announcement.

Susquehanna trims its target
Analyst action added to the cautious mood. On October 21, Susquehanna cut its price target on Infineon from EUR 100 to EUR 85 while reaffirming its "Positive" rating. According to media reports, the research house expects only moderate earnings and guidance surprises from semiconductor companies overall.
Investors now have a firm date to circle: Infineon will publish its fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on November 10, alongside its outlook for the 2026/27 fiscal year.
