Infineon's EUR 1.1 Billion Villach Bet on GaN Chips Wins EU Backing as Susquehanna Trims Target
Published on 11/01/2026 at 10:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon will build what it describes as the world's first high-volume production line for GaN power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers, a EUR 1.1 billion commitment at its Villach site in Austria that the company intends to spread through 2034. Production is slated to begin by the end of 2027, and the project carries EUR 319 million in support under the European Chips Act.
The announcement, made Tuesday, positions the German chipmaker at the center of Europe's push for high-volume manufacturing of gallium nitride power devices — a technology increasingly tied to the power-hungry infrastructure behind artificial intelligence.
Susquehanna Keeps Buy Rating, Cuts Target to EUR 85
On October 22, Susquehanna reaffirmed its positive stance on Infineon shares while lowering its price target to EUR 85 from EUR 100. The move paired a reduced objective with an unchanged recommendation.
The same day brought word that Infineon, Microsoft, NVIDIA and UnternehmerTUM Accelerator had jointly launched a Physical AI Growth Lab aimed at European start-ups working in robotics and industrial AI. The program is scheduled to run from January through April 2027.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Infineon had already deepened its NVIDIA ties on October 21, announcing an expanded collaboration on 800-volt direct-current architectures and GaN-based power conversion systems for AI data centers.
Intel's Soft Guidance Weighs on the Sector
Broader chip stocks came under pressure on Friday, and Infineon was caught in the downdraft, shedding 4.5%. Reuters reported that Intel's weak outlook and fresh concerns over AI spending weighed on the industry, with the pullback hitting technology names in the US and Asia as well as European chipmakers — Infineon explicitly among them.
Intel guided for fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of USD 15 billion to USD 16 billion, below the USD 17.1 billion analysts had been expecting, according to media reports. Those same reports pointed to worries about the AI investments of major cloud providers following Amazon's results, with weaker PC demand and the heavy costs of building out AI capacity also cited as drags on Intel's outlook.
