Infineon's EUR 1.1 Billion Villach Gamble Wins Brussels Blessing as GaN Era Takes Shape
Published on 10/30/2026 at 06:30 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon Technologies will sink roughly EUR 1.1 billion into its existing cleanroom facilities in Villach through 2034, a build-out the European Commission gave the green light to on Wednesday by approving EUR 319 million in Austrian state aid. The money underpins what the German chipmaker bills as the world's first high-volume production of gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers, with output slated to begin at the end of 2027.
The Commission said the aid supports the expansion of the existing plant run by Infineon Technologies Austria AG. Word of the Villach commitment came on Tuesday, two days before Brussels signed off.
Enphase First in Line for 900-Volt Switches
Demand for the new devices is already taking shape. Enphase Energy disclosed on Monday that it intends to use Infineon's monolithic bidirectional GaN switches rated at 900 volts in its own power modules for solid-state transformers destined for AI data centers. The components have already been tested and are being folded into development setups.
Infineon's ties to the AI infrastructure build-out run deeper still. On 21 October the company announced an expanded collaboration with NVIDIA covering GaN-based power conversion systems for 800-volt direct-current architectures in AI data centers, with the emphasis on high-voltage converters.

Warstein Welcomes 350 Staff as Start-up Lab Opens
Beyond Villach, Infineon this week opened a new office and laboratory building at its Warstein innovation site, where some 350 employees are set to move in. The facility includes around 1,200 square meters of lab space, and the investment by GARBE Institutional Capital and BC Partners Real Estate landed in the mid-double-digit millions of euros, according to company figures.
On the start-up front, Infineon is a partner in the Physical AI Growth Lab, launched on 22 October by the UnternehmerTUM Accelerator alongside Microsoft and NVIDIA. The free programme, aimed at European founders working in physical AI, robotics and industrial artificial intelligence, runs from January to April 2027 and takes no equity stake in participating companies.
Investors greeted the flurry of announcements warmly, lifting the shares 2.3% during the session.
