Infineon's Gallium Nitride Push Gains EU Approval as Chip Sector Absorbs Intel Shock
Published on 11/02/2026 at 06:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deInfineon shares fell 4.5% on Friday, caught in a broad retreat across European semiconductor names after Reuters reported that Intel's disappointing guidance and mounting unease over the scale of AI spending at major US technology firms weighed on the sector. The Munich-based chipmaker was among the stocks swept up in the move, with the decline tied to the wider industry backdrop rather than company-specific news.
Brussels Signs Off on Villach Funding
The European Commission has approved EUR 319 million in state support for Infineon's planned expansion at its Villach site, where the company intends to invest roughly EUR 1.1 billion through 2034. At the heart of the project is what Infineon describes as the world's first high-volume production of gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers, with output scheduled to begin at the end of 2027.
Analysts Trim Targets Without Turning Bearish
Susquehanna had already moved to a more cautious valuation on October 21, when analyst Christopher Rolland cut his price target on Infineon to EUR 85 from EUR 100 while reaffirming his positive rating on the stock. The reduction therefore reflected a recalibration of expectations rather than any change in the underlying recommendation.
Enphase Taps Infineon Switches for AI Data Centres
Roughly a week ago, Infineon and Enphase Energy disclosed that Enphase will deploy Infineon's bidirectional GaN switches in power modules for solid-state transformers used in AI data centres. According to the two companies, the components have completed successful testing and are being folded into Enphase's IQ-SST development programme, though production qualification has yet to be completed.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?
Infineon followed that up on October 27 by unveiling a reference design for a power distribution board that allows engineers to evaluate GaN-based high-voltage intermediate bus converters for 800-volt systems in AI data centres.
Building Out the Ecosystem
Beyond hardware, Infineon is deepening its ties to the AI and robotics supply chain. On October 22, UnternehmerTUM Accelerator, Microsoft, Infineon and NVIDIA jointly launched the Physical AI Growth Lab, a programme aimed at European start-ups working in physical AI, robotics and industrial AI. The initiative runs from January to April 2027.
Closer to home, the company opened a new office and laboratory building at its Warstein innovation site on Wednesday. Around 350 employees are expected to move in, with laboratory space spanning roughly 1,200 square metres.

Intel's Soft Outlook Sets the Tone
The sector-wide pressure traced back to Intel, which guided for fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of USD 15 billion to USD 16 billion — below what analysts had been expecting. Media reports also pointed to investor concern that heavy data-centre investment by Amazon and Alphabet could strain free cash flow, adding to the cautious mood around chip stocks.
Results Date in the Diary
Infineon has earmarked November 10 for the release of its fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 figures, a date the company flags as provisional in its financial calendar.
