IonQ shares climbed 7.7% after the quantum computing specialist disclosed a $7.5 million follow-on award from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). The funding, announced Thursday, falls inside the previously disclosed $21.1 million collaboration between the two parties — it does not represent fresh money on top of that framework.

The cash is earmarked for the second build-out phase of the quantum network in Rome, New York, where IonQ is working toward an end-to-end quantum networking infrastructure.

A Financing Round Already in the Books

The AFRL award lands roughly two weeks after IonQ closed its previously announced equity offering, confirmed in a mandatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The company sold 20.5 million shares of common stock and 29.5 million pre-funded warrants at a combined public offering price of $40.00, alongside warrants with a seven-year term to acquire a further 100 million shares. A vehicle managed by Heights Capital Management was lined up as the buyer. All told, the placement raised $2.0 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IonQ?

Separately, IonQ struck an all-stock deal to acquire Elisity. The announced transaction value runs to as much as $1.3 billion, including an earn-out component of up to $150 million. Management expected the deal to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals.

Two Banks Trim Targets, Keep Ratings

Wall Street's reaction to the capital-raising cycle showed up in price targets. Morgan Stanley, according to media reports, cut its target from $49 to $43 while analyst Scott Fessler kept his "Equal-Weight" rating. Rosenblatt Securities lowered its target from $100 to $70, with analyst John McPeake sticking to his buy recommendation. Neither house changed its stance — only the numbers moved.

Cambridge Lab Opens Its Doors

On October 15, IonQ and the University of Cambridge inaugurated the IonQ Quantum Innovation Centre at the Ray Dolby Centre within the Cavendish Laboratory. The site is slated to host a 256-qubit Superion quantum computer as well as a network for distributing quantum entanglement. According to the University of Cambridge, nine research projects received funding in the centre's first grant call, spanning quantum computing, quantum networks, quantum sensing and security. The facility is also intended to support skills training in the field.

The Next Confirmed Date: November 5

IonQ has pencilled in November 5, 2026, for its third-quarter results, covering the period ended September 30. The figures are due after the market close, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 p.m. US Eastern time.
