IREN shares jumped 21% on Friday after the company reported quarterly results and new customer contracts, but the market's enthusiasm now hinges on something less glamorous than order intake: whether the infrastructure can be switched on when promised.

The company's fiscal 2027 first-quarter revenue climbed 66% quarter-over-quarter to US$228 million. AI cloud revenue reached US$200 million, up 182% from the prior quarter, while the order backlog grew 22%. The figures, released Thursday, gave investors a clear yardstick for judging the buildout plans — AI cloud already dominates quarterly revenue, making its operational progress a more meaningful gauge than any single trading session.

Microsoft Delay Exposes Execution Risk

Reuters reported Thursday that IREN's infrastructure deliveries for Microsoft are running behind schedule following requested changes to the network design. A supplier's scheduling and a customer-requested design switch combined to slow implementation. IREN said the delay will not trigger financial penalties — a relief for shareholders, since it removes at least that immediate financial burden.

The design change underscores how tightly the buildout is interwoven with customer requirements. A convincing contract win, in other words, needs an equally convincing technical execution.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

That same day, IREN disclosed a slip in its operating target: more than US$4 billion in annualized recurring revenue, originally targeted for year-end, is now expected in January 2027 — possibly as late as February. Management said the goal is fully contracted and financed.

Contract Quality Under the Microscope

The backlog reported Thursday stood at US$20.3 billion. After the quarter closed, IREN signed two more contracts, one with a five-year term. That long-term deal carries a volume of roughly US$22 million per IT-MW, with 90% of GPU capital expenditure prepaid by the customer — terms that speak to the quality of the agreement, since the client is financing a substantial share of the outlay upfront.

Longer agreements strengthen planning visibility, provided the contracted services are ready on time. Customer prepayments also improve the conditions for expansion, to the extent they cover the necessary investment.

Adjusted EBITDA came in at US$66 million, reinforcing the confidence generated by the post-quarter contract extensions and new deals — contingent, again, on IREN meeting the additional obligations reliably.

Europe Fits Into a Longer Queue

On October 21, IREN announced a planned 300 MW AI data center campus in Badajoz, Spain, with first operations slated for 2028. The project opens an additional growth avenue, though its distant horizon makes it a next-stage development rather than the near-term test. For now, the capacity already committed remains the decisive proving ground.

The verdict, then, is constructive but conditional. Revenue growth and contract terms argue in IREN's favor — as long as execution keeps pace with commercial success. The stock's surge raises the bar for the next milestones. Trust will be earned above all if the company converts its contracted demand into live business within the revised timetable.
