The transformation is nearly complete on paper. The market, however, remains unconvinced. IREN, once a straightforward Bitcoin miner, has spent the past year repositioning itself as a landlord of computing power for the artificial intelligence boom. The strategy is ambitious, the contracts are signed, and the financing is in place — yet the stock's trajectory tells a story of deep skepticism rather than celebration.

Shares closed Friday at €31.91, down 3.88% on the day. The weekly decline stands at 2.09%, while the monthly picture is starker still, with a 16.22% drop. Those figures obscure a genuinely chaotic stretch: the stock has swung from forced-selling lows to a 30%+ rally and back again within a matter of days, leaving investors to wonder which direction reflects reality.

A Hedge Fund Implosion Rattles the Stock

The recent volatility traces back to a forced liquidation. Hedge fund Situational Awareness held IREN shares worth $401 million as part of a broader portfolio of $8.5 billion in related AI infrastructure bets. When Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Bank of America issued margin calls, the fund was compelled to sell over several days, driving the stock down to €29.31 on July 29.

Adding to the pressure was a sector-wide reassessment. When Meta unveiled its own Meta Compute project in mid-July, the market began treating major cloud providers not merely as customers of GPU-cloud operators but as potential competitors. That shift in perception hit the entire AI infrastructure complex, with IREN caught in the crossfire.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Bernstein's Bold Counterpoint

Amid the turmoil, Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani published a note titled "The semis guys have your back," reaffirming a Buy rating and a $100 price target — implying upside of more than 161% from current levels. Chhugani pointed to recent industry deals, including an agreement between AMD and Core Scientific and a reported arrangement between Hut 8 and Nvidia that could be worth up to $50 billion.

His thesis rests on IREN's vertically integrated model: the company secures land and power, designs and builds its own data centers, and purchases, operates, and maintains its GPU hardware in-house. That approach, he argues, positions IREN to capture value across the entire stack rather than relying on a single layer.

The broader analyst community is less enthusiastic. The consensus rating sits at "Moderate Buy," derived from eight buy ratings, three holds, and one sell over the past three months. The average price target of $75.18 implies roughly 97% upside — substantial, but well short of Bernstein's conviction.

The $2.8 Billion Question

Beyond the analyst debate lies the operational reality. IREN has signed multi-year contracts worth $2.8 billion, with customers including Microsoft, Nvidia, and newer AI names like Perplexity and Figure AI. Management raised its year-end target for annualized AI-cloud revenue to over $4 billion, up from a previous goal of $3.7 billion, and says approximately 85% of that target is already secured by contract.

The gap between announcement and execution, however, remains the crux. The year-end target is nearly 30 times the annualized AI-cloud revenue recorded in the March quarter — a comparison that isn't entirely apples-to-apples but nonetheless illustrates the scale of the ramp required. In that same quarter, Bitcoin mining still accounted for 76.8% of total revenue, with AI cloud contributing just 23.2%. The market's valuation has shifted far faster than the underlying business mix.

A Financing Juggernaut

The buildout carries a hefty price tag. IREN has secured an investment-grade financing package of $3.65 billion for GPU hardware, following a $3 billion convertible bond issuance. The capital intensity fuels market nervousness: the current market capitalization stands at €11.85 billion, increasingly supported by long-term data center contracts rather than Bitcoin price fluctuations.

The central tension is straightforward. Contracts are, at this stage, paper. Margins materialize only when data centers come online and customers begin paying. That gap between announcement and utilization drives the persistent volatility — and raises the question of whether IREN can convert its backlog into cash flow faster than new shares and debt instruments dilute existing holders.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The Infrastructure Roadmap

The long-term plan hinges on securing more power for more computing capacity. The 1.4-gigawatt facility in Sweetwater came online in April 2026, and IREN is targeting a global pipeline of five gigawatts. A new 800-megawatt campus in South Australia, planned for 2028, would connect Asia-Pacific markets via submarine cables.

A Stock Still in Correction Territory

Despite the recent bounce, the technical picture remains damaged. The stock trades roughly 25% below its 50-day moving average of €42.58 and its 200-day average of €42.14. Against the November 2025 all-time high of €68.61, the drawdown stands at 53.48%. Yet the shares remain nearly 140% above the 52-week low of €13.31 from August 1, 2025 — a reminder of how dramatically IREN's fortunes have shifted over the past year, from pure-play miner to contested AI infrastructure play.

The coming weeks will test which narrative prevails: Bernstein's conviction in a structural re-rating of the sector, or the broader market's caution over forced-selling aftershocks and the pace of contract execution. For now, the stock sits in a waiting pattern — neither euphoric nor panicked, but tethered to one simple question: can IREN turn its paper backlog into real cash before dilution erodes the value of the contracts it has worked so hard to secure?
