Jones Trading moved IREN from Hold to Buy on Tuesday, with analyst Kevin Dede credited for the call, according to media reports. The $40 price target stayed exactly where it was — an upgrade without a raise, a pattern that repeated across the Street as other research houses kept their Buy, Overweight and Outperform ratings intact while trimming their valuation yardsticks.

The stock had already done the talking. Shares jumped 21% on Monday, one session after the company posted quarterly results that beat expectations and unveiled fresh contract wins. The rebound also rode a friendlier tape for AI-linked equities, which recovered from a broad selloff driven by worries over data center construction delays, financing costs and the valuations attached to artificial intelligence businesses.

Cloud Revenue Triples While Losses Pile Up

For its first quarter of fiscal 2027, IREN reported total revenue of $228 million, a 66% increase on the prior quarter. The AI Cloud segment did the heavy lifting: its top line climbed 182% quarter over quarter to $200 million, at a gross margin of 86%. The reporting period closed on September 30, and the company flagged further contract extensions and new agreements signed after quarter-end.

Bottom-line numbers were less flattering. IREN booked a net loss of $263 million, while adjusted EBITDA came in at $66 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Contractually secured future revenue now stands at $20.3 billion, up 22% from the previous quarter. Roughly two-thirds of that backlog sits with counterparties carrying investment-grade ratings, per company statements.

A $15 Billion Bill and a Deadline That May Slip

Against that order book stands a hefty capital commitment. IREN has penciled in $15 billion of capital expenditure for the remainder of fiscal 2027.

The company still expects to hit more than $4 billion in contracted annual recurring revenue by January 2027 — but that target could slide to the end of February. Management cited two causes: a customer-requested design change and the timing of equipment deliveries. Specifically, network design modifications demanded by Microsoft have held up some infrastructure shipments.

IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The upgrade lands at an awkward intersection of storylines. On one side sits a cloud business expanding at triple-digit rates and a backlog climbing toward the mid-$20-billion range; on the other, a multi-billion-dollar buildout, a widening net loss and a schedule that Redmond's revisions have nudged off course. Investors, for now, are pricing the former.
