IREN's Spanish Blueprint Is Approved â the Earnings Test Comes November 5
Published on 11/01/2026 at 03:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deIREN shares fell 4.5% on Friday, caught in a broad selloff across technology and AI-infrastructure names. The trigger was not a company-specific announcement but a sector-wide mood swing: investors are growing uneasy about whether the enormous sums being poured into artificial intelligence will generate adequate returns, and whether rising financing costs could slow data-centre buildouts. Results and guidance from Amazon and Intel added to the anxiety, and weakness in digital assets weighed on sentiment as well.
That distinction matters. A sector-wide loss of confidence does not disprove IREN's expansion plans, but it does raise the bar for their economic justification. Neither a falling share price nor the sheer scale of announced projects is sufficient grounds for a forward-looking assessment.
Permits and Power: Real Progress, Not Yet Revenue
On 21 October, IREN announced the formation of IREN Europe and confirmed it had secured approval for civil works at its planned AI data centre in Badajoz, Spain. The campus is designed for roughly 300 MW of capacity, with first operations targeted for 2028. According to the company, a grid connection is also in place.
Those are concrete preconditions for development â more substantial than a non-binding growth ambition. They are not, however, equivalent to an operating campus. Investors should keep secured groundwork separate from project targets still to be reached. The key question is whether further company disclosures make the path to the planned start-up more traceable.
The European build-out comes with personnel decisions to match. IREN appointed Roberto Purcaro as Executive Director for Europe and Ăngel CorcĂłstegui as chairman of the European supervisory board. That underscores the organisational structure behind the expansion â but structure alone replaces neither operational progress nor hard business figures.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
B. Riley Keeps Its Buy, Trims Its Target
Friday's analyst reaction fits the more cautious reading. B. Riley Securities reportedly maintained its buy rating while cutting its price target from $91 to $64. A positive fundamental view and a reduced valuation stood side by side.
That combination is no contradiction. It shows that confidence in the longer-term trajectory does not automatically justify every valuation level. A buy rating does not dispel the market's economic questions, just as a lower target does not invalidate the entire expansion programme.
The Long Runway Is the Valuation Risk
The counterargument lies in the gap between today's expectations and the targeted start of operations. Badajoz is a planned project; existing permits and a power connection pre-empt neither execution nor later commercial proof. Anyone inferring future earnings from announced capacity alone would be skipping several outstanding steps.
Market scepticism is not confined to the willingness to invest. It also targets whether heavy AI spending will produce sufficient returns. Even an unchanged build-out plan might therefore offer only limited support to the stock if investors demand stronger economic evidence. Additional weakness in digital assets could further weigh on the backdrop. None of this guarantees a particular share-price path: what matters is whether company-specific progress can offset sector-wide doubts.
November 5 Is the Next Real Test
IREN plans to publish results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 on 5 November. The reporting period ended on 30 September 2026, and a conference call is scheduled for 17:00 Eastern Time. That date offers the next concrete checkpoint at which business figures â not expansion targets â take centre stage.
What results and management commentary actually reveal about operational development will be decisive. Fresh project information would be an additional data point, though none is promised alongside the earnings release. Until then, the dividing line holds: secured preconditions on one side, expansion targets still to be delivered on the other.
The sensible stance sits between euphoria and blanket scepticism. IREN has achieved a verifiable development step in Europe. The share-price decline proves no failure â but it is a reminder not to confuse future plans with results already earned.
