IREN's Spanish Campus Has Power, Permits and a 2028 Target â the Balance Sheet Is the Open Question
Published on 10/25/2026 at 09:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deIREN shares slipped 2.0% on Friday, closing at âŹ22.27, as a sector-wide retreat in neocloud and data-centre names pulled the stock lower alongside its peers. The trigger was a Reuters report published Thursday raising concerns that debt-financed expansion of AI infrastructure may no longer be sustainable. IREN was explicitly named among the companies caught up in the selloff.
A Sector Story, Not a Company One
The distinction matters. Reuters framed the pressure as a question about how the buildout gets funded across the industry â not as any new financing difficulty disclosed by IREN itself. No company-specific announcement drove the move; the concern was the sector's reliance on borrowing to grow.
Short sellers, meanwhile, have been the beneficiaries. According to Reuters, bearish positioning across the sector has generated notional gains of $6 billion so far this month. Those are unrealised paper profits spread across the industry as a whole, not profits booked specifically against IREN.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
Badajoz: Megawatts, Permits and a Date With 2028
Against that backdrop, IREN's European ambitions offer the clearest window into how the company intends to grow. The group has established IREN Europe and secured both construction approval and grid-connected power supply for its planned AI data-centre campus in Badajoz, Spain. The site is designed for roughly 300 megawatts of capacity, with first operations targeted for 2028 â a goal, not yet a live facility.
The company has also put a face on the European push: Ăngel CorcĂłstegui chairs the European supervisory board. That organisational step gives the expansion structure, though it should not be read as a response to the funding worries now circulating through the sector.
The Next Hard Data Point
For investors looking to move past sentiment, the calendar offers one fixed appointment. IREN will report results for its fiscal 2027 first quarter â the period ended 30 September â on 5 November 2026, with a conference call scheduled for 5 p.m. US Eastern time that day.
That release will be the next occasion to weigh expansion plans against actual business performance. The European buildout sketches the intended direction; the quarterly figures will supply the next checkpoint along the way. A sector selloff sharpens that distinction â it does not settle it.
