IREN spent September collecting Wall Street verdicts that point in sharply different directions. Within a five-day stretch, the AI infrastructure operator drew a fresh outperform rating, a two-notch upgrade from a major bank, and a neutral initiation that warns the market may be underestimating just how capital-hungry this business really is.

The most bullish voice arrived on September 18, when Northland Capital Markets launched coverage with an Outperform rating and a $99 price target. That call rests on a straightforward thesis: demand for high-performance AI data centers will keep outpacing global supply, handing established operators with secured power arrangements a durable edge over newcomers. Northland's price target implies the stock could more than double from current levels.

That launch came just four days after JPMorgan made a far more dramatic move. On September 14, the bank lifted IREN two full notches — from Underweight straight to Overweight — and raised its price target from $46 to $65. Taken together, the two bullish calls suggest significant upside remains, provided the company executes on its large-scale partnerships.

Capacity, Not Demand, Is the Binding Constraint

Company management has been direct about where the bottleneck sits. Scarce capacity on the supply side, not customer appetite, represents the defining limitation for the market right now. That framing supports the bull case: if demand structurally exceeds what the industry can deliver, operators already holding contracted capacity should be able to defend their pricing.

Not everyone is convinced that dynamic will hold. Rothschild & Co Redburn initiated coverage on September 23 with a Neutral rating and a $40 target, expressing concern that the capital intensity of the model is being underestimated. Building and running specialized hardware demands continuous heavy investment. If new competitors raise fresh capital in public markets, they could bring capacity online at aggressive prices — and in that scenario, operating margins would come under rapid pressure. Stretched-out payback periods on deployed computing systems would leave shareholders with far less room for value creation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

A Sector-Wide Repricing, Triggered by a Rival's IPO Filing

The cautious camp got an unwelcome data point on Friday, when a broad sell-off swept through AI infrastructure names. The catalyst was competitor Nscale's planned initial public offering, following its registration filing with U.S. authorities. The news yanked the question of future overcapacity and price wars in the so-called neocloud services market back to the forefront of investors' minds.

IREN did not escape the repricing. The stock changed hands at EUR 37.80, down 2.4% from Friday's close of EUR 38.74. The retreat captures the nervousness running through the entire segment.

For market participants, the shift marks a clear change in mood. Where recent months were dominated by the rapid buildout of computing capacity, attention has migrated to economic viability. Additional players sharpen the race for large customers and force incumbent operators to defend market share more aggressively.

The Price-Power Question

Everything now hinges on pricing power for computing capacity. AI data center operators have benefited from extraordinarily strong demand set against limited supply — a shortage that guaranteed attractive margins and kept installed systems running near full utilization. A wave of capital flowing to new entrants could unsettle that balance. Should the market grow faster than actual enterprise demand, a price war becomes a real risk.

Investors will need to watch closely whether established operators can hold their terms in new contracts. Early concessions on price would weigh on long-term earnings expectations.

Buyback Groundwork and the Road Ahead

One supporting factor could come from capital allocation. On Wednesday, IREN filed a request with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission seeking an exemption from preparatory reporting requirements ahead of a shareholder vote on stock buybacks. The procedural step does not launch a repurchase program, but it signals that the groundwork is being laid for resolutions at the annual meeting.

Chart levels and that shareholder vote now serve as the near-term signposts. As long as the stock holds above its recent lows, the medium-term recovery of recent months remains a viable base case. A decisive break below established support zones, by contrast, would risk extending the current consolidation.

The annual general meeting, where shareholders are set to formally approve future buybacks, is the next concrete date on the calendar. At the same time, the progress of Nscale's IPO will act as a key sentiment gauge, giving investors direct signals on how the market intends to value AI infrastructure earnings power going forward.
