Lenovo's shares finished Friday at EUR 4.20, up 3.8% on the day, leaving the stock just 0.4% shy of the 52-week high of EUR 4.21 it touched on 18 September. The advance was set in motion by a CICC research note that reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating with a target price of HKD 51, arguing that the commercialization of AI supernodes is gathering pace and that Lenovo is executing a shift from standalone servers toward full system-level AI infrastructure capabilities.

That bullish call landed alongside fresh evidence of the hardware maker's growing footprint. Industry data from IDC shows Lenovo topped global x86 server shipments in the second quarter of 2026 for the first time, with related revenue climbing 96% year on year — good enough for second place worldwide. The company had already moved to capitalize on that momentum on 16 September, unveiling the ThinkAgile VX850 V4 among a slate of new infrastructure products designed to modernize virtualized environments for AI workloads.

A Second Analyst Voice Adds to the Server Narrative

CICC was not alone in revisiting the stock. On Tuesday, BOCI initiated coverage with a buy recommendation and a target of HKD 48.4, pointing to the potential for a re-rating driven by Lenovo's broad AI offering and citing progress in lifting pretax margins within the Infrastructure Solutions Group.

The upbeat mood extends beyond data centers. Omdia figures for the second quarter of 2026 reveal that Lenovo raised tablet shipments in China by 63% year on year, even as the overall Chinese market contracted 13%. That performance lifted the company's share of the segment to 15%, achieved against a backdrop of cautious consumer spending and elevated memory prices that forced several established rivals into meaningful declines.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lenovo?

Legal Fronts Cut Both Ways

While the operational picture brightened, the legal landscape proved more mixed. Lenovo filed on 17 September to have its US patent suit against Asus dismissed with finality in a California court, according to Reuters. The 2023 case had alleged that certain Zenbook laptops infringed four Lenovo patents, and the withdrawal removes a drawn-out dispute from the company's plate as it focuses on hardware and infrastructure partnerships.

A separate matter, however, is only beginning. The US International Trade Commission has opened an investigation into imported DDR5 server memory products sold by Lenovo, Micron, Supermicro and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, following a complaint filed by Netlist on 11 August. Netlist claims four US patents covering memory modules and multiplexer assemblies have been violated and is seeking import and cease-and-desist orders. The ITC's formal launch of the probe does not constitute a ruling on the merits, and Lenovo and its co-respondents will have the opportunity to challenge the validity of the patents as proceedings advance.

Embedding Deeper Into the AI Stack

Beyond PCs and tablets, Lenovo is pushing further into hardware for complex AI inference. In the financial sector, high-performance ThinkStation workstations are being deployed alongside DeepSeek models to sharply cut response times in automated fraud detection. The company has also gained corporate visibility through cloud partnerships: under an agreement between Akamai and Anthropic to expand CPU-based cloud infrastructure, Akamai secured seven-year supply contracts with Lenovo.

For investors, the central question is how efficiently Lenovo can convert solid operational momentum into durable earnings while the legal battles over key server components run their course.
