McDonald's is quietly assembling a broader playbook to revive its US business, combining menu experimentation, in-restaurant advertising and a revamped value strategy — even as Wall Street grows more cautious about how quickly any of it will translate into sales.

The Chicago-based chain confirmed Thursday that it is weighing protein-forward additions to its lineup, including bowl-based dishes, grilled chicken and egg snacks. According to Bloomberg, these items remain in development, and no launch timetable has been set. In a separate move, McDonald's is testing third-party advertising on the digital menu boards at select company-operated restaurants, with commercials appearing after customers complete their orders on screen.

A Longer-Term Value Pact With Franchisees

Pricing is the other front. Bloomberg, citing an internal memo, reported that the company is working toward a longer-term value agreement with its franchisees in the US. A bridge plan would rely on limited-time seasonal items and digital discounts to keep price-sensitive diners coming through the doors in the interim.

That effort runs alongside a promotional staple making its return. The Monopoly game kicks off in the US on October 6 and runs through November 1, with game pieces this time scanned through the company's app. Prizes include physical goods, cash and loyalty points.

Dividend Streak Extends to a Half-Century

Despite the operational heavy lifting, the board is sticking with its shareholder-friendly stance. On September 17, directors approved a 4% increase in the quarterly dividend to $1.93 per share, payable in December. The move extends a payout that McDonald's has raised every single year for half a century — a track record that offers some reassurance to long-term holders even as stretched consumers scrutinize every restaurant dollar.

Traffic Warning and an $8.5 Billion Commitment

Management poured cold water on expectations for its home market midweek. With inflation still elevated, the company expects flat customer traffic across its own US restaurants, according to Reuters. To shore up the network, McDonald's has pledged roughly $8.5 billion in support for franchisees through 2036. The plan drew visible skepticism: many market participants worry that heavy spending on rent relief and remodels could weigh on profitability for an extended stretch. Management is nonetheless targeting operating margins in the low-to-mid 50% range by the end of the decade.

Analysts Trim Targets, Keep Ratings

Thursday brought a wave of price-target revisions. BMO Capital cut its target to $310 from $335, while TD Cowen lowered its to $270. Both kept their ratings unchanged but pointed to pressure on US sales and execution risks. JPMorgan also adjusted its numbers, reducing its target to $260 from $280 while maintaining an Overweight rating; analyst John Ivankoe found few surprises in the latest strategic plan and flagged a more moderate growth pace in the years ahead. RBC Capital Markets had warned the same day that US same-store sales would likely stay under pressure, with a rebound unlikely until the offering resonates again with lower- and middle-income consumers. Expansion targets below market expectations added to the downbeat mood.

Investors Weigh the Risks

For shareholders, the strategic reset carries considerable uncertainty. While the company modernizes its menu and marketing, the support measures for restaurant operators demand substantial capital. That caution is reflected in the share price: the stock is down 20% year-to-date in German trading, closing Friday at €207.60 after a 0.5% gain on Monday.
