McDonald's rolls out ArchIQ voice ordering and an app-based Monopoly game as RBC and JPMorgan cut price targets amid weak U.S. same-store sales.

McDonald's is betting that a sweeping technology overhaul, a revived customer promotion and a multi-billion-dollar lifeline to its operators can pull the burger giant out of a deepening traffic rut — even as Wall Street trims its expectations for the stock.

The company confirmed Friday that its ArchIQ platform will bring voice-activated ordering to drive-thrus, monitor inventory levels and sharpen order accuracy across its restaurant network. The rollout forms the backbone of the chain's long-term NEXT strategy, which management says is designed to standardize operations that had grown uneven from store to store.

A Digital Monopoly and Ads on the Menu Board

Consumer-facing initiatives are arriving in parallel. Starting October 6, 2026, the Monopoly prize game returns to McDonald's USA — this time running entirely through the company's own app, a move aimed at deepening digital loyalty and drawing guests back for repeat visits. In selected company-owned locations, the chain is also testing third-party advertising on digital menu boards, with spots appearing after customers complete their orders. A company spokesperson characterized the ad experiment as a limited pilot.

Franchisee Support Package Raises Eyebrows

To shore up operations across its franchise network, McDonald's has committed roughly $8.5 billion in support for franchisees through 2036, with about $5 billion of that flowing in the coming years. Reuters reported that the announcement stirred concern among investors that the hefty outlay could squeeze margins and delay any recovery.

Management nonetheless set ambitious operational targets: efficiency gains of about 250 basis points in restaurants by 2030, alongside a goal of capturing 1.5 percentage points of market share in chicken and beverages. The company also aims to defend its leading position in beef products.

Analysts Pare Back Price Targets

The scale of the spending gave several research houses pause. On Thursday, RBC Capital Markets cut its price target to $285 from $290, citing expectations that U.S. same-store sales will stay weak until lower-income consumers return in force, and noting that the company's planned store growth fell short of market forecasts. JPMorgan lowered its target to $260 from $280. Both firms maintained their existing ratings on the shares.

The cautious mood reflects a broader chill in consumer spending. At its investor day, McDonald's management presented the "Make It Golden" program and warned that industry-wide guest traffic in key markets is likely to stagnate as long as inflation remains elevated. Bloomberg reported that a weaker perception of value for money and sluggish home-market sales are adding pressure. For the current quarter, the company guided toward slightly negative U.S. same-store sales, a reversal from the prior quarter's 0.8% gain.

Dividend Streak Offers a Counterweight

One bright spot came from the payout side: on September 17, McDonald's announced a 4% increase in its quarterly dividend to $1.93 per share, marking its 50th consecutive year of rising dividend payments.

Investors have yet to be convinced. In German trading, the stock closed Friday at €207.60, leaving it down 21% year to date and just 0.9% above its 52-week low.
