Mercedes-Benz closed out Tuesday with two unrelated announcements that nonetheless point in the same direction: the Stuttgart group is reshaping what it owns and what it discloses, while investors keep their eyes fixed on operating cash generation.

The more tangible of the two moves is the sale of the company's European fast-charging network to Electra. According to dpa-AFX, the deal covers 47 charging parks and 374 charging points, including 31 parks in Germany and six in Austria. No purchase price was disclosed, which means the transaction's contribution to earnings cannot be quantified — and neither can any relief to the industrial cash flow.

That distinction matters. Offloading infrastructure says nothing on its own about profitability, and a sale proceeds figure would not equal a profit in any case. The disposal therefore offers no evidence by itself that Mercedes-Benz's operating earnings power has improved.

Battery Health Goes Public in Japan

On the same day, the group's Japanese arm began disclosing the condition of high-voltage batteries in certified used electric vehicles. Dealers measure the state of health (SOH) with a diagnostic system and pass the reading on to prospective buyers, giving them an extra basis for valuing a car. The scheme applies only to certified used EVs from Mercedes-Benz Japan; plug-in hybrids are expressly excluded. It is not a blanket programme for all used cars of the brand, nor a globally announced rule.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

The disclosure is most useful when read alongside the battery warranty. If residual capacity falls below 70% of new-condition capacity within the warranty period, the battery is replaced free of charge. The measured value describes the current state; the guarantee governs the replacement case — two different forms of guidance for a buyer.

Coverage varies by model group. For the EQA, EQB and EQC, the named CLA models and the GLC electric, the warranty runs 8 years or 160,000 kilometres from first registration, whichever limit is reached first. EQE, EQS and their SUV variants, plus the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, carry 10 years or 250,000 kilometres, again ending at whichever threshold comes first. Mileage, not just age, therefore shapes the warranty frame.

Mercedes-Benz Japan plans a further SOH measurement event at the Mercedes-Benz Studio Tokyo in the second half of November, adding a second route into the battery-health topic beyond the dealership.

The Quarter Behind the Headlines

Both announcements land against a soft financial backdrop. Figures published on 28 October for the third quarter of 2026 showed revenue of EUR 30.7 billion, EBIT of EUR 1.77 billion and group net profit of EUR 1.52 billion. Adjusted group EBIT fell 15% year on year to EUR 1.78 billion, and free cash flow from the industrial business came in at just EUR 172 million.

Mercedes-Benz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Guidance sharpens the picture. Mercedes-Benz Cars is expected to post an adjusted return on sales of 2–3%, group EBIT should match the prior-year level, and industrial free cash flow is projected well below it. Without a disclosed price tag, the charging-network sale cannot be measured against that guidance.

For shareholders, the takeaway is a familiar one: the number of charging parks handed over and the battery readings now published in Japan are operational details. The verdict will rest on operating profit and cash generation — not on the size of the infrastructure portfolio the group no longer owns.
