Micron's Earnings Eve: Solid Memory Prices, Shifting AI Timelines, and a Stock Priced for Perfection

Micron Technology heads into its fiscal fourth-quarter report on Wednesday with its shares trading at 949.90 euros in European dealings, essentially flat on Friday with a move of just 0.02 percent. The muted close masks a far more dramatic backdrop: the stock has climbed 18 percent over the past 30 days and sits only 14 percent below its 52-week high of 1,103.80 euros. That kind of run leaves little room for disappointment when the memory specialist opens its books after the U.S. close on September 30.
A Warning That Cuts to the Heart of the AI Trade
The most immediate source of unease comes from Susquehanna analyst Mehdi Hosseini, who flagged uncertainty Friday over the timing of revenue tied to the ramp-up of new Nvidia products. Sales that the market may have already penciled in for this year could slip into the next one. The distinction matters: this is not necessarily a cancellation, but on Wall Street, timing is everything.
That warning captures the central tension of Micron's current valuation. When investors price in a flawless growth trajectory, any delay becomes a source of friction. Micron's deep ties to the largest buyers of high-performance memory are both its greatest strength and its most exposed flank. If production ramps at key partners stretch out by even a few months, the finely balanced revenue picture wobbles.
Wells Fargo's decision Wednesday to trim its price target from $1,525 to $1,400 — while keeping an Overweight rating — fits neatly into this more cautious posture.
The Structural Case Holds Firm
Yet writing off Micron's structural position would be a mistake. The foundations of the memory cycle remain solid. On Wednesday, Citigroup raised its own target from $1,150 to $1,300 and reiterated a Buy rating, citing persistently firm DRAM prices and an undersupplied market. Analyst Atif Malik pointed to unexpectedly strong DRAM pricing as the driver, with the bank lifting its estimates for both the August and November quarters and arguing the company can beat prior fourth-quarter expectations. Both DRAM and NAND remain in short supply.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?
Rosenblatt struck a similar chord the same day, with Senior Research Analyst Kevin Cassidy reaffirming a Buy rating and a $1,500 target. Both houses point to the same structural deficit in memory that plays to the chipmaker's advantage.
Management Set a High Bar in June
The company itself raised expectations well before this week. Back in June, management guided for fourth-quarter revenue of $50.00 billion, plus or minus $1.00 billion, and adjusted earnings per share of $31.00, also with a $1.00 cushion. Multi-year strategic customer contracts underpin that outlook.
The comparison base is formidable. In the prior third quarter, Micron posted adjusted earnings of $25.11 per share, while GAAP gross margin jumped to 84.6 percent from 37.7 percent a year earlier.
Next-Generation Memory in the Pipeline
Beyond the near-term supply squeeze, Micron is pushing ahead on the technology front. In mid-September, the company demonstrated a 512GB DDR5 server memory module across multiple platforms, achieving speeds of up to 9,200 MT/s while cutting operating power by more than 60 percent compared with four 128GB modules. Semiconductor partners AMD and Intel are actively evaluating the module, with volume production slated for the second half of 2027.
In a separate move to sharpen its long-term research direction, Deirdre Hanford was appointed Corporate Vice President and President of Micron Research Labs.
What Wednesday Will Decide
For all the medium- and long-term opportunity embedded in the structural hunger for memory, the near-term drop is considerable. When the numbers land Wednesday after the U.S. close, it won't be the rearview mirror that sets the direction — it will be guidance for the coming quarter. Should the feared revenue shift materialize, or should the margin outlook fall short, profit-taking could set in quickly. Anyone holding the stock should brace for volatile trading days ahead.
