Micron Technology shares slipped 2.2% on Friday, caught in a sector-wide retreat across semiconductor and AI names rather than any fresh operating disclosure from the company itself. The pressure came from several directions at once: Amazon's earnings miss stoked worries about the cost of building out AI infrastructure, concerns over PC demand weighed on chipmakers, and Samsung Electronics posted results that fell short of expectations. Reports of progress by Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies in DRAM added a competitive worry to the mix, with high memory chip prices also casting a shadow over the market backdrop.

Fubon Securities moved the other way, initiating coverage of Micron on October 22 with a buy rating.

A Bonus Plan With Strings Attached to Profit

On the employee side, Micron said on October 22 that it will roll out quarterly payments tied to the company's financial performance for staff worldwide starting in fiscal 2027, split evenly between cash and stock. The change followed union demands for profit-sharing in Taiwan. A one-day work stoppage took place in Taoyuan the same day, with media reports saying the local union was pressing for an agreement on bonus terms and profit sharing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron Technology?

That standoff remains unresolved. The separate union in Taichung had already signed a deal with Micron Memory Taiwan on October 21; according to Reuters, both sides withdrew from the planned mediation process and the terms were not disclosed. Media reports on Friday said Micron had announced three bonus payments for employees in Taiwan to be paid out together.

$3 Billion Supply-Chain Push

Two days before the compensation announcement, Micron unveiled a strategic investment in Indium Corporation aimed at expanding critical mineral refining and high-purity materials production in Rome, New York. The company said the funding forms part of a plan to invest up to $3 billion in the US semiconductor supply chain, with a long-term supply agreement intended to secure Micron's access to the materials.

Wafer Bonding and Vertical HBM on the Drawing Board

Micron's technology roadmap also drew attention, with a Monday report pointing to wafer bonding in a new DRAM process and High-NA EUV lithography in later generations. The company is additionally developing vertical HBM memory and vertical storage for AI inference running directly on end devices, according to the report.
