Moderna's Melanoma Data Are Solid. Wall Street Is Still Arguing Over the Bill

Two analysts looked at the same 42% and reached opposite conclusions this week. That number — the reduction in the risk of melanoma recurrence or death that intismeran autogene delivered alongside Merck's Keytruda versus Keytruda alone — is the clinical headline from the Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial. What it is not, as the divergent calls from TD Cowen and Citi make plain, is an answer to the question now driving Moderna's valuation: whether the benefit justifies what it costs to manufacture a therapy built from each patient's own tumor material.

TD Cowen's Tyler Van Buren raised his price target on the stock to $90 from $40 on Wednesday while keeping a Hold rating. His reasoning rested on a higher estimated peak earnings potential for intismeran, factoring in possible use in adjuvant-treated melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer. Those are projections, not booked business. Citi's Geoff Meacham, by contrast, reaffirmed a Sell with an $80 target on Thursday, questioning whether the treatment advantage can clear the hurdle of individualized tumor collection and production — even as he acknowledged expectations for broader oncology success. Bernstein, for its part, stayed Neutral and read the share-price pullback as profit-taking after a long-awaited release.

A Trial Result and a Share Reaction, Decoupled

The data themselves were published Thursday, ahead of schedule, after details had leaked. The study enrolled 1,137 patients with surgically removed Stage IIB–IV melanoma. Moderna and Merck moved up the disclosure once specifics became public; the formal presentation was set for the ESMO congress in Madrid, a date listed by the University of Sydney.

What followed on the screen was not a celebration. Reuters reported further declines after the leak and the early release, with media accounts saying the results fell short of the lofty bar investors had set during a months-long rally. That reaction carries no single clean explanation — but it does demonstrate that strong efficacy numbers and a strong stock response are two different things. Anyone building a thesis on the trial alone is leaving half the valuation question untouched.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?

CEO Stéphane Bancel said the companies are preparing a US regulatory filing, according to Reuters. A filing is a plan, not an approval, and the distinction matters for anyone modeling revenue.

Where the Bull and Bear Cases Actually Diverge

The optimistic reading leans on breadth. Should the indications TD Cowen considered firm up, the earnings ceiling could extend well beyond a single use. The melanoma finding supports efficacy in the population studied — it does not by itself prove success in other cancers, and the documented melanoma data must not be treated as evidence for the lung-cancer application also under discussion. In the favorable scenario, further progress would validate the economic assumptions step by step; in the unfavorable one, earnings expectations would outrun the evidence backing them.

The pairing of a doubled price target with an unchanged Hold rating is itself instructive. A better view of a therapy's prospects does not automatically produce a buy.

Two Dates to Watch

Attention now shifts to two markers. The first is the oncology investor event Moderna scheduled for Thursday, running alongside the ESMO presentation — an occasion to frame the path forward against a skeptical read on personalized manufacturing costs. The second is firmer: on November 6, 2026, the company will report third-quarter 2026 results.

That report will test whether the clinical story and the financial one are beginning to converge. The more durable basis for valuation would emerge if medical progress and business performance increasingly fit together. Until then, the market's task is to separate what the trial proved from what investors hope it implies — and to remember that a single positive readout settles neither side of that argument.
