Moderna's Melanoma Data Landed. The Market Was Already Looking Past Them
Published on 10/25/2026 at 15:40 | Editorial boerse-global.deCiti reaffirmed its sell rating on Moderna on Thursday, keeping a price target of $80.00 in place after the company's Phase III melanoma results crossed the wire. The stock gave up 1.1% on Friday. What separates the two days is less about the science than about how much good news investors had already paid for.
The data themselves hold up. In the INTerpath-001 trial, Moderna and Merck tested intismeran autogene — a personalized mRNA vaccine — alongside Keytruda in 1,137 patients whose high-risk melanoma had been surgically removed. Over a median follow-up of 24.6 months, the combination cut the risk of recurrence or death by 42% compared with Keytruda alone. At the two-year mark, 82.2% of patients on the combo remained relapse-free, against 70.0% on the checkpoint inhibitor by itself.
Distant metastasis or death fell 38% with the combination. That figure is where the reception split. TD Cowen analyst Tyler Van Buren called the recurrence result convincing, but said the effect on distant metastases came in below expectations. An earlier, smaller trial had shown a larger reduction — though differing patient populations and follow-up windows make a direct comparison between the studies unreliable. Reading the gap as fading efficacy would be a stretch; so would treating the medical win as a blank check on valuation.
The benefit arrived late, not evenly
The timing of the effect is arguably the most instructive part of the dataset. No difference in recurrence or death risk appeared during the first six months. After that point, a pre-specified analysis put the reduction at 58% for the combination arm. For a personalized therapy, that curve matters more than any single headline percentage.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Moderna?
Citi's note leaned on revised estimates for peak intismeran revenue and flagged potential opportunities in adjuvant melanoma and in non-small cell lung cancer. Reuters attributed Thursday's pullback to profit-taking following a months-long rally, with the detailed results having been released early after a data leak. Bloomberg, meanwhile, drew attention to the gap between oncologists' positive read and investors' cooler response.
Practical hurdles temper the commercial picture. Tumor analysis and manufacturing together take roughly six weeks or longer, and the regimen runs to nine doses spaced three weeks apart. Personalization is not a scientific label here — it means a bespoke production process and a drawn-out treatment schedule, and the added protection has to be weighed against that burden.
Safety looked manageable. Severe treatment-related adverse events occurred in 14.2% of combination patients versus 13.4% in the comparator group. Fever, injection-site pain and fatigue were among the common complaints.
Moderna at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The larger unknown sits with overall survival. Those data are not yet mature, and no statistically significant benefit has been established. A lower risk of recurrence should not be conflated with proven longer life. Moderna and Merck have said they are preparing US regulatory filings and are in dialogue with the agencies.
What the sell-off really measures is the distance between medical progress and the expectations baked into the share price. The trial backs the personalized approach in surgically resected high-risk melanoma; it does not yet answer every question about durable benefit. Moderna will now be judged on how long that benefit lasts — not on the size of the first round of enthusiasm. The next confirmed financial date is November 6, 2026, when the company reports third-quarter 2026 results.
