National Grid has moved on multiple fronts this week, advancing long-term transmission plans in the UK while simultaneously facing organized opposition to its gas infrastructure proposals in the United States. Second Consultation Opens for East Midlands Transmission Line
On Thursday, the British grid operator unveiled refined designs for its electricity transmission project linking Weston Marsh to East Leicestershire, kicking off the second consultation phase to gather stakeholder feedback. The East Midlands undertaking is designed to bolster long-term transport capacity across the UK power network.
The timeline stretches well into the next decade. National Grid intends to file its formal approval application in 2028, with construction targeted to begin in 2029 and the line expected to enter service by 2033.
Asset Monitoring Contract Expanded
A day earlier, on Wednesday, National Grid renewed its partnership with Jacobs for its asset health inspection program. The revamped Asset Health Intervention Programme carries a five-year term and a total value exceeding $13 million (GBP 10 million). The scope now covers the Central, Southeast and Southwest regions of the UK, bringing more than 800 transmission assets under monitoring and technical maintenance.

Successful bidders are set to receive awards in January 2027, with contracted flexibility delivery scheduled for April 2027 through March 2028.
Earlier in the month, on September 14, the distribution arm integrated local voltage management into its long-term flexibility round for the first time. Across more than 800 zones, the operator is seeking over 2.8 TWh of flexibility, a procurement effort it values at up to GBP 4.6 million.
Digital Simulation and AI Adoption
National Grid Partners, the group's investment arm, announced a strategic investment in Terragrit on September 17. The company's platform uses artificial intelligence to simulate operational changes to physical utility networks in advance. The investment amount was not disclosed.
The push toward digital control tools reflects a broader industry shift. A National Grid Partners survey published September 18 found that 78% of innovation leaders at US utilities are already deploying AI to manage rising electricity demand on their networks. Data center-driven consumption growth is widely seen as a key driver, placing fresh strain on grid capacity.

Consumer Advocates Challenge New York Gas Proposal
On the US side, the utility is encountering resistance. Earthjustice and Alliance for a Green Economy spoke out Wednesday against a National Grid rate-stabilization proposal in New York State. The groups argue the plan would facilitate expansion of the gas system there by more than $1 billion, potentially burdening consumers with noticeably higher bills starting in 2028.
The week's developments capture the dual pressures facing the company: heavy investment requirements for grid modernization on one hand, and mounting regulatory disputes over costs and tariffs on the other.
